Thankfully, The Mets Are Back In Action Tonight

Thankfully Mets baseball is back tonight after what seems like an interminable break with the club headed to Atlanta for three days with an off day and then three in DC, six big games to start the second half push for the Pennant (why not, a guy can dream can’t he?)

Seems all the Mets news is just rehashed Matt Harvey speculation (another reason to be thankful the action on the field is back) and from reading story after story it looks like the Mets are hoping beyond hope that Miguel Batista can pitch to at least league average so as to not force the front office to promote Harvey. It looks as though the competition for Dillon Gee’s (and we wish Gee all the best and a speedy recovery as he undergoes surgery today to repair the artery in his shoulder. The surgery is being performed by Dr. Robert Thompson who has expertise in this type of procedure) spot in the rotation is a two man race between Batista and Harvey , may the best command of pitches win!

This years All Star Game was the first one I’ve watched in six years. Usually this week in July I’m out in the woods at the Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp but since my son has achieved his Eagle rank and has no need for merit badges anymore, he decided to go to New Mexico for a two week camping and hiking trip, so that spared me a week of listening to howling coyotes and drinking gallons of Goop (a form of Kool-Aid) and let me enjoy the All Star Game in the air conditioned comfort of home. I was really looking forward to watching the game.

WOW, what a letdown. Of course Tony La Douchebag put me in sour mood by not starting R.A. Dickey, then Justin Verlander decided to catch an early dinner and a movie by giving up five runs in the first inning and gets lifted from the game.  Then I had to put up with Fox’s coverage. If I were a Fox Sports exec, I would really have to think about pulling Tim McFullofshit off the Game of the Week and World Series not just because he is so bad at analyzing games but he because he is entering that “old guys say crazy shit” part of his life. He’s done this in stages, first he stopped dying his hair, then he stopped caring about pronouncing players names correctly ,he’s getting close to the piss stains on your pants stage of life. I’m telling you he’s a scandal waiting to happen, when you hear McFullofshit call a player an asshole on the air or start rambling about topics that have nothing to do with what’s going on in the game, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

How in the name of Coco Channel did Erin Andrews allow herself to wear whatever the fuck that was she was wearing on national television?

It’s sad to see this game turn into an event where fans just bash away at or are apathetic about because the game used to be a real big deal. Back when the leagues were ruled by League presidents, the stories abounded on how Joe Cronin the AL President and Hall of Fame player and Chub Feeney the NL President would give impassioned speeches before the game and the players really wanted to win for League pride. Now with the abolition of League Presidents and inter-league play and so many player’s changing not just teams but leagues, the game has lost a ton of its luster.  It’s gone from being the Mid-Summer Classic to an outdated annoyance. Sad.

THE METS MANAGERS LIST IS TRIMING ITSELF

Before we get on to anything here today, I must convey my most heartfelt condolence to Sandy Alderson and his family on the passing of his father John, who was killed by a car Saturday night in St. Petersburg while crossing a street. From all the stories I’ve read John Alderson was a ‘young” 87 years old and to be taken from his family like this is a tragedy.

I guess Clint Hurdle went for the sure thing instead of playing the longshot by taking the Pirates job. Or maybe Hurdle knows something we don’t on who the next Mets manager will be. By the way, if Wally Backman was such a slam dunk as a major league manager how come no other major league team looking for a manager requested Backman come in for an interview? I’m just asking?

(UPDATE: Now I see why Hurdle took the Bucs job and I think you’ll agree with me I hope he’s a success in the Steel City)

So it looks like a two man race between Terry Collins and Bob Melvin and I agree neither guy stirs my passions but I’m willing to let this play out and see if it works. It also looks as if Chip Hale and Tim Teufel  could get coaching spots with the Mets with Backman taking over the helm at Bingo or Buffalo.

Can we just trade F-Mart for a bunch of bats, uniforms and helmets that seem to have gone missing the last few years in Flushing? The one time phenom  was to start yesterday in a Dominican League game but missed his start due to car troubles. No bullshit. CAR TROUBLES!!!! After the news got out about this the team and F-Mart tried to cover his ass by saying there was a miscommunication about his reporting date. Yeah right. I guess Omar Minaya has found a job in the DR running a team as this kind of cover up stinks of the Omar regime.

Speaking of Charlie Samuels, as bad as it is for him to get fired by the Mets and to be looking at criminal charges being filed against him, the worst part could be if convicted and sentenced to do time, Charlie would have to wear orange every day. Maybe Samuels could share a cell with Bernie Madoff in the Crimes Against The Skill Sets wing of prison

Adam Rubin has a long Q & A with David Wright getting his take on the past and present of the club.

I wish the Mets had a guy like Amare Stoudemire the last few years who would call out his underachieving teammates like Amare did last night. Could be Stoudemire is pissed that LeBron and D-Wade picked Chris Bosh over him to a BFF?

NON-METS: I see where the Fishsticks have fired coach Scott Gordon as the team is doing a swirlie of their season with a 10 game losing streak. Gordon should be relieved to be relieved of his coaching duties. Isn’t it time Gary Betmann and the hierarchy of the NHL seriously think about contracting the Icelanders and a few other teams from the league? The Icelanders play in a dump of an arena (the place is filthy and many of the seats are broken and ripped) and only sell tickets when the regal Rangers come to Uniondale. Take the Isles, Blue Jackets, Panthers, Coyotes, Lighting, Predators and Thrashers and either contract them or merge them a la the Minnesota North Stars/Cleveland Barrons in 1978 and make two teams and put one in Winnipeg and the other in Quebec City.

CAUTION THE SURGEON GENERAL HAS DETERMINED THAT READING THIS POST COULD BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH

Trying to write something creative this morning and it’s just not happening so I’ll just throw some shit on the wall see what sticks:

If Jose Reyes is 100 % healthy then why not let him start on opening day? Why is it even a question? His legs don’t seem to be any problem so if his thyroid levels are fine then why wouldn’t Jose be at shortstop on Monday?

I would love to be in the room when soon to be Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z sit down and talk to LeBron James about joining the Brooklyn Nets. Mr. Prokhorov is going to be the most newsworthy sports owner this town has seen since a big blowhard ship builder from Cleveland rolled into town.

This Monday has been renamed Monumental Monday. Opening day at $iti Field. The NCAA Final and two hour episode of 24.  I’m busting sweat just thinking of how the Jack Bauer, Dana Walsh  interrogation scene will play out.

Major tip of the BLUE Mets cap to Shannon Shark over at Mets Police for uncovering the Fanwalk faux pau naming Sid Fernandez the winner of Game 7 of the’86 World Sereis when it was actually Roger McDowell who earned the win. At the time that game was over, we really didn’t give a rats ass who go the winner to tell the truth all I remember is pandemonium in the streets of Queens and that for one on the dozen or so times in my life I woke up the next day in my bed having no recollection of how I got home.  Ahhhhhh good times. Also Mets Police is recruiting for the Blue Cap Army to meet up Monday at $iti Field.

It’s a three man race to grab the 25th spot on the Mets roster. The candidates are Mike Jacobs, Frank Catalanotto and Chris Carter. Very tough choices. The first one I’d dismiss in Jacobs who is a hit a home run or miss guy and a not very good first baseman. It was commendable of Jacobs to put on the catcher gear and volunteer to be the emergency catcher. How often do you need an emergency catcher? Carter has earned the name The Animal for Jerry Manuel and Catalanotto is a savvy vet who can play just about any position on a baseball field. If I had to make the choice, I’d take Frankie The Cat.

Who? Raul Valdes Who? Raul Valdes Who? Raul Valdes

Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome the new and improved LMILLZ

I don’t look at Darryl Strawberry as being a quitter for leaving The Apprentice, it’s more like he was bored and tired of the stupid tasks he was asked to do. Whoever signed off on making this show two hours should BE FIRED! Thank God for TiVO. By the way as soon as Cyndi Lauper and Summer Sanders are fired I’ll be done with The Apprentice.

So long Chris Coste, Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out!

It looks like the new McFadden’s at $iti Field is going to be THE place to be.
