“Ya Gotta Remember” The 1973 NL Pennant Winners the NY Mets

<

I haven’t seen nor heard anything pertaining to the NY Mets having a day/night to honor the 1973 NL Pennant winners.   I really hope that there is something in the works to bring back the surviving members of that team for a celebratory remembrance.   It would an awful shame to let this 40th Anniversary of the “Ya Gotta Believe” Mets   go unnoticed by the organization the ’73 team’s season for its comeback ability should be given be revered and honored just like the ’69 and ’86 champions as the Ya Gotta Believe mantra of Tug McGraw was no showboat move it was what had this team come together to have one of the great runs not just in Mets history but baseball history as well.

The ’73 Mets were awful from May to July winning 32 games and losing 49 with the low make of the season coming on July 4th when the Mets found themselves 12.5 games behind the first place Chicago Cubs in the NL East. July was still a bad month for the team as they put up a dismal 12-18 record but from August on the Mets went 49-22 while all the other NL East teams went into the dumper no team hit the skids worse than the Cubs who went an astonishing awful 30-52 during that stretch.

This team was no offensive juggernaut that’s for sure with Rusty Staub the leading hitter driving in 76 runs on 12 HR and a .781 OPS. John “The Hammer” Milner lead the team with 23 HR and 72 RBI and surprisingly Wayne Garrett hit 16 HR as well. The club was in the bottom third of every offensive statistic in the league that year except for Walks where they had the 6th best rate in the NL.

What ran this Mets team in ’73 was the pitching especially a solid stable of left-handed pitching plus The Franchise. Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack and George Stone supported the Ace Tom Seaver in the rotation , one of the best in baseball that year, along with swing man and veteran pitcher Ray Sadecki and of course their Fireman (that’s what the closer was known as back then) Tug McGraw.

1973 was also the swan song or Willie Mays who after a few embarrassing missteps in centerfield knew it was “time to say good bye to America”.

How great would a day at Citi Field be to honor this Pennant winning Mets team by having Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Rusty Staub, Jerry Grote, Wayne Garrett , Ed Kranepool and of course The Franchise, Tom Seaver  etc. on the field for a pre-game ceremony?

Please, please, please we cannot let this anniversary go without a day of remembrance. It’s already a big disappointment that a Salute to ’73 day is not on the season calendar already.

Sandy Alderson and the Mets Baseball Ops Explain the Facts of Life to Season Ticket Holders

Last night at Citi Field Sandy Alderson, Paul DePodesta, JP Riccardi and John Ricco sat down for a Q & A session with Mets season tickets holders.  Of the season ticket holders in attendance were the first couple of Mets Blogdom Ed Leyro and Taryn Cooper.  On Ed’s Studious Metsimus site he gives a recap of the some of the questions posed to the group and the answers given by the Baseball Ops members assembled. Some of these stood out to me, such as being asked why it’s taking so long for Alderson to make the Mets a contender. And Alderson replied “”We don’t want to be there one year and gone the next.” There is segment of Metsfandom whose craniums are as thick as a milk shake at the Shake Shack. When you inherit a holy mess both personnel and cash flow wise, it’s going to take some time to straighten things out. Alderson and his crew have the Mets on the right path and the impatient Mets fan (who I believe like Chipper Jones said puts a Highlander cap on when the Bronx Bastards play in October)  is either too dense or quite frankly too ignorant to see this. In case you missed it, MLB on its 2013 Prospect Watch ranked three Mets in the top 30 of its top 100 list, Travis d’Aranud  at #6, Zack Wheeler #8 and Noah Syndergaard #29 . Wheeler and d’Aranud will be up by no later than mid-season, Syndergaard in two seasons at least add them to Matt Harvey and you have a nice foundation for the future. Oh yeah I know what you’re saying but the outfield sucks!!!!

Alderson has let it be known in interview after interview that yes, the outfield is a problem spot and yes, I could have spent money to find a bonafide ML outfielder but he wasn’t happy with the sticker price, something he also admitted he has to get over:

“We understand what the market dictates and we have to be prepared to exist in that market,” said Alderson, who indicated there is an urgency to winning, and that he has not set out on a 10-year plan

Seems Alderson felt there were a couple or three players out there he could have signed but was unwilling to match the price set by the market. I wonder if he could have a do over, if he’d been a little more aggressive in bidding for Ryan Ludwick, Cody Ross or even Reed Johnson as any of those three would be the Mets top outfielder and none of them broke the bank in their newly signed deals. Ross was a player I wanted badly on the Mets as he hits with some pop from the right side of the plate and would have been a big upgrade in right field.  To be fair here as well, there was not much else to choose from in the outfield free agent pool since there was no way in hell Josh Hamilton or Nick Swisher were going to be Mets, nor should they have been and my other wish list outfielder Shane Victorino got a year a couple of million dollars more than I thought he would from Boston and even though he’s born and bred  Phuck Phace  I’d have taken a run at him. Would you be happy with a Duda, Victorino, Ross/Baxter outfield? I would.

The best part of all this is in 11 days Mets pitchers and catchers will report to Port St Lonesome and 5 days after that the full squad will be there and then we can see for ourselves what we have in store in 2013 with our own eyes (and the eyes of those covering the camp) and be done with all this off season speculation.

The Day The Magic Was Back

When people ask me why I root for the NY Mets, I tend to pause and try to form the answer in my head but I find that it’s too complicated to explain to the uninitiated. Not just fans of other teams but mostly to those who are not baseball fans at all. Yesterday would have been the perfect day to take all the non-baseball fans I know to Citi Field and expose them to that amazing phenomenon we know and love as Mets baseball.

Yesterday was a day of pure love and total affection for a team and a player who has won over our hearts. No talk of claw backs, bridge loans, trades and overall angst of another losing season. No this day was a throwback to the kind of parties we used to throw in our old house where no one cared if you spilled some beer on the floor or scattered empty packages of Guldens mustard and your cup holder was the cracked concrete under your seat not some fancy schmanzy do-hickey thingy in front of your seat.  Yesterday was a day where Mets fans said just because we moved on up to a dee-lux ballpark in sky, that we forget where we came from and it was about time we started acting like the who we are loyal, boisterous, opinionated and most importantly knowing how to have a good time at the ballpark baseball fans that we are.

The day was about R.A. Dickey and the spotlight deserves to shine brightly on Dickey who I have had the honor of meeting a few times at Citi Field and he mesmerizes me during each and every visit I’ve had with him, and it was about who we are as Mets fans. R.A. Dickey is why we are Mets fans. Dickey’s story is our story; it’s the essence of Metsdom.  Once a first round pick ready to sign for 7 figure bonus until an x-ray shows his right elbow is missing a valuable piece of tendon which knocks that bonus down a couple of figures.  He knocked around the big leagues for a while but without much success, Dickey was ready to throw in the towel and try a new profession but something told him to try one more time. He learn a pitch that no one respects and writers belittle him that he is trying to get hitters out with smoke and mirrors but the critics are ignorant to the time and sweat equity you’ve put into making this pitch work for you.  Other men who have had success with this pitch answer your call for help and you not only master the pitch but get to the point where the pitch and your personal perseverance pays off where you are now consider the best starting pitcher in your league.  Forget Hollywood, that’s Flushing Baby!!!

That’s us in a nut shell, why is it that during the bleakest of times during a down season we all see a vision in our heads of Tug McGraw slamming his glove into his thigh and the words YA GOTTA BELIEVE!! Flashing all around in out subconscious? I imagined Casey, Mrs. Payson, Gil, and Tug looking down yesterday at the scene at Citi Field Casey telling Mrs. Payson  “Amazin’ Amazin’ Amazin’” and Gil speaking out loud “see what some toughness and believing in one another can achieve”? and Tug hovering over by the seats in center field with the crew from the 7 Line yelling “Can I get a beer here”?

I’m sure many of the younger members of this Mets team was surprised by the passion and exuberance  of the crowd yesterday for many of them it was there first time seeing the true blue and orange Mets fan doing his and her thing. Oh they have seen big opening day crowds but opening day is mostly amateur hour as a lot of the suits and ties think it’s good day too to take the corporate tickets and act like assholes.  Closing day is where you separate the posers from the die hards.

What a difference from last year’s final game at Citi Field to this year. Last year was freezing with a cold drizzle and there were maybe 2,000 folks at the game but we were there to see Jose Reyes win a batting crown and to thank him for being Jose Reyes since the odds were good he would be an ex-Met in 2012. Reyes of course reciprocated our coming out to cheer him on by bunting and then bidding the game and the Mets fond farewell. It left us stunned and angry.

Yesterday after morning rain the sun came out it was a bit muggy but not uncomfortable and the man we came to see was not only happy to see us but thank us for our undying support. So it was much better closing day at Citi Field than last year and hopefully closing day in 2013 will be even better after winning a World Series championship. Am I out of mind? No but after yesterday I just Gotta Believe!.

Who Needs TRAIDS ? It’s Matt Harvey Day

I’m positive that the Mets front office would love to make a deal or two or three today, Trade Deadline Day, (I was very close to taking the day off from work by claiming today as a religious holiday) but the Mets baseball ops know this team needs a ton of work to become a pennant contender and none of the roster restoration that’s needed can be accomplished today.

The Mets outfield is a disgrace, as is the catching position along with the bullpen and depth at starting pitcher, but still the lunatic fringe of Metsfandom scream for Sandy Alderson to make a TRIAD!!!!!!!! Everyone is tickled that Zack Wheeler has zoomed up the prospect charts to the point he will be promoted to Buffalo this weekend and a September call up to the big club is not out of the question. What the loonies kind of forget is it took dealing Carlos Beltran to get Wheeler. The only player the Mets poses that would bring backing anything to close to a Wheeler-like prospect is David Wright and he’s not going anywhere.

There are some, who think that Scott Hairston can bring back a big return prospect wise in a deal.  Hairston is outstanding when matched up against left handed pitching and he plays a plausible outfield, so if you were the Mets GM and listed Hairston for sale what do you think you’d get back in return?  B or C level prospect or a C and a D? Well, then why trade him? As it stands now, Hairston is the best outfield option the Mets have and with Jordany Valdespin as his lefty platoon partner to go with the platoon in left of Bay-Baxter, that is the Mets best chance to salvage any positive outfield production. I’d rather sit tight and keep Hairston than roll the dice on some kid from A ball.

The fact that the Mets are in a transition period is tough for many of the fan base to grasp. The Alderson Plan is to rebuild the organization via the Entry Draft and building a strong minor league system.  There is no reverse in this plan. What makes it more difficult to stay the course with this way of doing baseball business, is the part of the fan base than is in dire need of immediate gratification, who feels the lack of a TRAID is sign of failure, thankfully the Mets front office laughs off the Mong Mets Fans who think this way.

A Good Reliever Is Hard To Find

Maybe the Mets should bring back the bullpen carts from the 1970′s could be Mets relievers are exhausted from running in from the pen

Watching the implosion of the Mets bullpen has pissed me off as it has you but fact is, this bullpen has sucked all year.  If I can take the Mets to task for anything to do with this pungent pen, it waited too long to fix it, the trade deadline may be to make your move.

We’ve heard all the names from Huston Street, Jonathan Broxton, Grant Balfour and Frankie Rodriguez as relievers the Mets have or should target as Mets fans feel anyone other than relievers who wear a Mets uni will pull a Mighty Mouse and save the day.  Not one of those pitchers is guaranteed to be any better than who the Mets are currently employing as relief pitchers and none of them will come for free.   Take K-Rod for instance, he’s owed about $4mil for the rest of the season and before the All Star break he could have been had for a next to nothing just by picking up the rest of the money on his contract. Now, it will be a bit tougher since he has taken over the closer role from John Axford. You could probably get Axford for nothing but the idea here is to improve the bullpen and Axford is far from an improvement.

Huston Street would be a fine addition to the Mets pen and if Alderson could get him plus LHP Joe Thatcher in a deal, that would be a huge upgrade. Street is owed $3+ mil for rest of 2012 with a $9 mil option for 2013 but the club can invoke a $500K buy out. Thatcher is an arbitration eligible player who  signed for $700 K for the year, so the money commitment to both player would be less than $4mil, if the money is prohibitive to the Skill Sets then just shut the franchise down but I have to think they could scrape some of Bill Maher’s minority money along with the other silent partners who bought in to pay for this bullpen upgrade. So what would the coast be in players? I have no idea but I know the Mets baseball ops has a big commitment to rebuilding the minor league system  and they will not over pay in players to get a two month pitcher rental.

The Rockies have a pair of relievers, RHP Matt Belisle and RHP Rafael Betancourt who I’d think you’d be able to obtain for a C level prospect or two. Belisle has stranded 79 % of the runners he has inherited which is one of the huge holes in the Mets bullpen, the ability of relievers to come in and get big outs with runners on base, and his walk rate of 1.5/9 IP is fabulous. The money a club would take on is about $1.8 mil for the rest of this season and in 2013 Belisle is owed $4.1 mil, so again the more money a club would agree to take on the less you would have to give up for Belisle or for Betancourt who has a stupid contract that pays the 36 year old right hander $4 mil for 2012 and $4.25 for 2013. The Rox would have to eat a lot of dead presidents to deal him.

RHP Shawn Camp of the Cubs would be a fine addition since he hardly makes any money (baseball wise that is) at $550K. Camp’s 80 % LOB number is what got my attention but I would bet he will be used as a tag team partner of either Matt Garza or Ryan Dempster when Theo Epstein decided to deal either or both starters.

Former Met right handed pitcher Darren O’Day could be on the Mets radar as he has a 87 % success rate when dealing with inherited runners but even though the Birds are double digits behind the Highlanders in the AL East race, they are just a half game off a Wild Card berth so I’d look at the O’s as buyers not sellers so O’Day may be off limits.

Trying to build up this Mets bullpen is not going to be easy. I have no idea how much money the Skill Sets have allotted to upgrade this team at the trade deadline. It would behoove the Mets owners to show the fan base they are back in the game by taking on additional salary, if they don’t they will be torn apart by the fan base and they will deserve every bit it of nastiness that will be hurled at them.

The Skill Sets can’t expect Mets fan to care until they see ownership cares, your move Freddy.

Thankfully, The Mets Are Back In Action Tonight

Thankfully Mets baseball is back tonight after what seems like an interminable break with the club headed to Atlanta for three days with an off day and then three in DC, six big games to start the second half push for the Pennant (why not, a guy can dream can’t he?)

Seems all the Mets news is just rehashed Matt Harvey speculation (another reason to be thankful the action on the field is back) and from reading story after story it looks like the Mets are hoping beyond hope that Miguel Batista can pitch to at least league average so as to not force the front office to promote Harvey. It looks as though the competition for Dillon Gee’s (and we wish Gee all the best and a speedy recovery as he undergoes surgery today to repair the artery in his shoulder. The surgery is being performed by Dr. Robert Thompson who has expertise in this type of procedure) spot in the rotation is a two man race between Batista and Harvey , may the best command of pitches win!

This years All Star Game was the first one I’ve watched in six years. Usually this week in July I’m out in the woods at the Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp but since my son has achieved his Eagle rank and has no need for merit badges anymore, he decided to go to New Mexico for a two week camping and hiking trip, so that spared me a week of listening to howling coyotes and drinking gallons of Goop (a form of Kool-Aid) and let me enjoy the All Star Game in the air conditioned comfort of home. I was really looking forward to watching the game.

WOW, what a letdown. Of course Tony La Douchebag put me in sour mood by not starting R.A. Dickey, then Justin Verlander decided to catch an early dinner and a movie by giving up five runs in the first inning and gets lifted from the game.  Then I had to put up with Fox’s coverage. If I were a Fox Sports exec, I would really have to think about pulling Tim McFullofshit off the Game of the Week and World Series not just because he is so bad at analyzing games but he because he is entering that “old guys say crazy shit” part of his life. He’s done this in stages, first he stopped dying his hair, then he stopped caring about pronouncing players names correctly ,he’s getting close to the piss stains on your pants stage of life. I’m telling you he’s a scandal waiting to happen, when you hear McFullofshit call a player an asshole on the air or start rambling about topics that have nothing to do with what’s going on in the game, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

How in the name of Coco Channel did Erin Andrews allow herself to wear whatever the fuck that was she was wearing on national television?

It’s sad to see this game turn into an event where fans just bash away at or are apathetic about because the game used to be a real big deal. Back when the leagues were ruled by League presidents, the stories abounded on how Joe Cronin the AL President and Hall of Fame player and Chub Feeney the NL President would give impassioned speeches before the game and the players really wanted to win for League pride. Now with the abolition of League Presidents and inter-league play and so many player’s changing not just teams but leagues, the game has lost a ton of its luster.  It’s gone from being the Mid-Summer Classic to an outdated annoyance. Sad.

Signs of Progress Within The New York Mets

Very interesting news coming from the Mets yesterday and today. First the team seems to be on the verge of locking up Jon Niese for the next 5 years, that will reward the lefty pitcher during his arbitration eligible years and buy back a year of his free agency eligibility.  This quite a progressive and proactive move by the Mets front office, something not seen in these parts in many ,many years.

Some reports have the deal at 5 years and $28mil, the 5 years is a big commitment to a pitcher who has suffered from fatigue and injury issues in his brief major league career but it speaks to the high esteem the front office holds Neise in.

During the winter there were rumbles that the Mets put Niese’ name out on the trade market (at the same time Billy Beane made it known that Gio Gonzalez was available in trade and of course the deal was made with the Nationals) that wasn’t an indication that the Mets were looking to rid themselves of the young lefty as some Mets fans jumped to that conclusion, it was more to see what was out there in trade for his valuable services as the Mets front office is trying very hard to add depth to the farm system.

Tying up Niese seems like a smart move by Sandy Alderson. As we see in this column by Mark Simon of ESPN, Niese put up some very impressive numbers involving K/9IP, BB/9IP and HR/9IP, add to that he is 25 years old and left-handed,  it’s hard for even the most jaded Mets fan to go against the front office in this move.

Seems like the verbal kick in the ass that Mike Peflrey received last week when it was reported the club discussed however informally about giving Big Pelf his release,  has now made its way to Jason Bay as Mike Puma reports there has been some talk about Bay becoming a platoon player if he continues to struggle at the plate.  This should show Mets fans that last year’s getting to know segment of Sandy Alderson’ reign as Mets baseball boss is over and now we are entering the “if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem” phase of rebuilding the Mets.

OK Freddy Now Show Us Why We Should Care?

Why is Freddy smiling? Well, he just beat the rap! picture credit to John Marshall Mantle of the NY Times

I care about Fred Wilpon’s finances as much as he cares about mine which is nil.  Yesterday was a win for Fred and Uncle Saul but was it a win for Mets fans? That remains to be seen.

My concern in this whole clusterfuck of finance is how and when do the Mets get back to being championship contenders and that Jeffy Wilpon is kept away from the big boys running the baseball operations. It doesn’t matter if the Skill Sets discover gold, oil and a poppy field in Mo’Zone, as long as Sandy Alderson and his staff are allowed to do the baseball work, things have a good chance of working out for Mets but if they go back to business as usual then yesterday could be looked at as a dark day for Mets fans.

I have no problem with the Skill Sets owning the Mets what bothers me is when they get themselves involved in things they have no business in like obtaining players either by free agency, trading or drafting. Right now you have very competent people employed to run that end of the business like you did in the mid 60’s when Whitey Herzog ran the farm system and in the 80’s when Frank Cashen ran the organization, both times the Mets had their best success. I believe if Wilpon leaves Sandy Alderson alone this could be a renaissance of Mets baseball and if Fred was smart he’d understand this.

The Skill Sets are still faced with massive debt on the team, ball park and SNY so all yesterday really did was drop one of their 99 problems now that Irv Picard ain’t one. One of those 99 problems for the Mets is how to get ass’s in the seats of Citi Field, of course winning would help solve that but in order to get the fan base revved up the ownership had to show there is a commitment to winning. By commitment I don’t mean spending stupid money like in the past but showing the fan base that they really want to improve this team. As it stands today the club is deficient in starting pitching and bench depth as well as not having a bona fide veteran catcher to go along with a crippling contract of Jason Bay who doesn’t look like he’s going to have a turnaround season. You want to win back your fan base, allow Alderson to deal Bay with the team that will take half of the $35 mil that owed to Bay ($16 mil this season and next with a $3mil buyout in ’14) and the Skill Sets take the other half then I’ll say there is a commitment to making the Mets better and the fan base will know it and maybe that will get folks back to attending games at Citi Field. But again with the massive debt still on the Wilpon’s shoulders I doubt we’ll see this. You know maybe if they just started telling Mets fan the truth about the financial commitment they are making towards the team would be a good start to mend fences with the fan base.
