METS AND CITY HARVEST TO HOLD FOOD DRIVE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 AT CITI FIELD

FLUSHING, N.Y., November 5, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced they will hold a Food Drive Wednesday, November 14 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Citi Field to benefit New Yorkers in need.

 

Fans can drop off their food donation inside the Hodges VIP entrance next to the Mets Team Store.

 

Fans donating 10 items or more of nonperishable nutritious food will receive a voucher redeemable for one pair of tickets to a select Mets game in April 2013.  Donors will also receive 15% off select merchandise at the Mets Team Store at Citi Field.  Season Ticket Holders who donate food can show their ID card to get 20% off select items.  The discount will only be honored Wednesday, November 14.

 

Among the items most needed are: canned fruit and vegetables, plastic jars of peanut butter, packages of hot or cold cereal, and packages of macaroni and cheese.  Items that will not be accepted are: unlabeled, expired, or dented cans; any open packaging; products that need to be refrigerated; or homemade products.

 

Fans dropping off food may park in Lot G on 126th Street between the Right Field Gate and Roosevelt Avenue.

 

City Harvest is working to help meet the needs of Hurricane Sandy victims while continuing to feed hungry New Yorkers through its network of emergency food partners.  In addition to daily deliveries to soup kitchens and food pantries across the five boroughs, City Harvest has been making emergency food drop-offs to Staten Island, Coney Island and Red Hook in Brooklyn, Breezy Point and Rockaway in Queens, and Manhattan.

The Acceptance of Failure

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the FACE of the Mets Franchise!

The Mets ended another losing season yesterday in Miami with a surprising win, only the 28th in the last 76 games that the team has played. For the fourth season in a row the Mets have been relegated to second division status, for the fourth season in a row the Mets have played embarrassing bad and losing baseball in the second half of the season. You, me and Greg Prince are having a tough time accepting this losing season after losing season but with the exception of SNY’s Bobby Ojeda the New York Mets organization has accept failure and its’ this acceptance of this losing culture that is the most damming and frustrating part of an ownership, front office, and manger that not only tolerates this mess but goes out its way to be like a soccer mom to the underachieving  players they employ, offering orange slices and juice boxes after uninspiring  loss after uninspiring loss instead of some good old fashion tough love and a kick in their double knit pants.

If listening to Terry Collins, who is slowly starting to irk me with his “the sun will come out tomorrow” press conferences after each and every uninspiring game this second half, tell me of how his team played hard and never let up wasn’t enough to make me puke, it was this Tweet from Justin Turner utility player and all important pie thrower that put me over the edge.

Of course the lemmings of our fan base were agreeing with Turner which meant I had to go and spoil it all by doing the job that Fred or Jeff Wilpon, Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins should have done, given Turner a dose of New York City reality. I would have left it at one nasty tweet but when Turner tweeted he couldn’t wait to get to spring training, I was apoplectic, and why does Justin Turner think he deserves to be a NY Met in 2013? Is throwing pies a dying art form like a blacksmith or a shoe cobbler? Again the fact that Turner is so damn happy about the events of the 2012 baseball season and to say he’ll be back in 2013 with the Mets in St. Lonesome is all the evidence I need to make my case that this organization has accepted failure.

During the A’s-Rangers telecast yesterday, A’s play by play man Glen Kuiper spoke about his pre-game talk with A’s reliever Ryan Cook who had come on to pitch in five straight games as the A’s completed the unbelievable job of ousting the Rangers from first place for the first time all season to become the AL West Champs. Kuiper said he asked Cook if he was feeling any fatigue with his workload so heavy the last week or so, Cook told him, “no one on this club is tired we have all winter to rest we are on a mission to win a championship”. Cook is 25 years old. Ruben Tejada is 21 years old and according to his manager needed some time off as the rigors of the season were wearing him down. That is the difference between a team fighting to win and a team accepting failure.

It has nothing to do with money it has to do with will, the will and mind set to win.  The Mets are severely lacking in the intestinal fortitude it takes to win a championship. The can discover oil under Citi Field making old Freddy a billionaire, it won’t matter until someone of authority steps up and starts ridding this team of the complacent  losers that permeate the Mets clubhouse,  if not, enjoy a few more years of 77-85 baseball

Sandy Alderson’s Mets Honeymoon Ends Wednesday Night

This winter will be more of an inferno than a hot stove for the Mets and it will be the defining off season for the Sandy Alderson regime. From reading Mets news this morning the hottest topic of the winter will be what becomes of David Wright and from where I sit I’d say we are looking at Wright becoming an ex-Met by the new year than a long term Met with a contract extension.

I’ve gone through this exercise before, it may be best for both the Mets and Wright to separate, this isn’t to say I want Wright to go, not at all, if he signed a long term contract to be a Met For Life that’s fine with me and if he and Sandy Alderson can agree on terms that are beneficial to the team and Wright well, hallelujah but the odds of that happening are as slim as Tom “The Blade” Hall in the stretch position.

What Alderson has to worry about is getting back players of value for Wright if he and Team DW are so far apart in negotiation that he has to think about moving him, if he lets Wright walk a la Jose Reyes, I’m heading for the nearest fallout shelter because it will Mets fan Armageddon in Flushing.

At some point we in the fan base have to make up our minds do we want a winning team or do we want this bunch of great guys to hang around and win 70-75 games every year?  There are some in the fan base who treat the Mets as a Lifetime Network movie, they get all emotional when players they love are mentioned as trade bait (or should I say traid bate ?) You can’t keep everybody. One of Frank Cashen’s successful management moves was to shuffle the roster even when coming off a successful season.  Cashen was drawn and quartered for not giving in to Ray Knight’s contract demands after the 1986 World Series in which Knight was the MVP of the series. As it turned out, Cashen made the correct move in letting Knight walk.  Alderson will make the same decision on Wright and do what is best for the New York Mets.  If Wright leaves there will be outrage and nastiness not seen in these parts since June 15th 1977, unless of course the Mets win the 2013 or 2014 World Series, then it will be David Who?

The NY Mets Bring Back That 70′s Show

Here they are your 1979 NEW YORK METS…………………

Marc Carig who covers the Mets for NEWSDAY after working the Highlanders beat asked a question on Twitter the other day about the Mets of 2012 and how they compared to the Mets of the late 1970’s. The late 70’s had the same feeling of despair and by 1979 Shea Stadium had become a place Mets fans avoided (attendance of 7,000 a game were the norm back then) The negativity from Mets fans still centered over the trading of Tom Seaver to the Reds in 1977. That alone makes the late 70’s far far worse in my eyes than what’s happening now in Flushing.

There are some stark parallels between the 70’s and what’s going on now in Flushing, ownership was a problem then as it is now. In October of 1975, Joan Whitney Payson died and nearly took the Mets franchise with her to the beyond. Her husband Charles Payson wanted no part of running the Mets so it was left to his daughter Lorinda de Roulet and the dastardly rat bastard M. Donald Grant. Where Mrs. Payson had no trouble spending money on the team,( she wanted desperately to bring Willie Mays back to NYC after see acquired the Mets she made an offer to Horace Stoneham to name his price for the contract of Mays.  In one of the few times that Stoneham was lucid he turned the offer down) Grant held on to every penny.

Today the Mets biggest problem is ownership and its lack of financial resources, not just to add talent but to make mistakes disappear like Jason Bay. The team is in a free fall right now that has a very 70’s feel t to it and what makes this second half gag job so bad is 2013 looks no better. Why?, because no one in the Mets ownership group can come out and tell the truth about the teams financial status. Management wants its most prize possession, its season ticket holders, to make a financial investment in the team in the form of purchasing tickets but won’t let them know what they are buying into, so why would anyone buy in?

The biggest problem with this ownership is their lack of transparency as opposed to the 70’s when we knew that M. Donald Grant was a miserable pick and he had no problem living up to that reputation.  This lack of being truthful with the fan base has turned Sandy Alderson into Fred Astaire. Whenever Alderson is interviewed, the first question is always about payroll and what it will be next season, at this point is when Alderson pulls out the straw hat and cane and does the ol’ Wilpon soft shoe.  

I’ve never understood why the Skill Sets could never be honest with their fan base? You would think that someone in the organization would try to get them to change the way they disseminate their message?  I’ll give the Skill Sets this much, as inept and awfully clandestine they are in conducting their baseball business , they haven’t reached M.Donald Grant status yet on my despicable meter but knowing them they’ll keep trying.

If you haven’t read Jason Fry’s piece on the Faith and Fear site please go read it now. Hopefully someone in the organization will show this to Freddy Skill Sets and try to get him to realize the Mets fans may be leaving the piss off stage of fandom to the apathetic stage of who gives a shit?

I don’t know how Terry Collins does it night in and night out trying to put a positive spin on the ineptness of his team.  Collins is treading on dangerous ground here going from a guy protecting his players to looking like he has no clue. Bobby Ojeda has been as big a Collins supporter as there is but last night even he couldn’t take it anymore calling out the players for sitting out claiming they’re tired. Ojeda went on a rant about how that’s the difference between a winning team and a losing team. He was 1,000 % on point. For once I’d love for Collins to come out and say that he’s let his team know that the difference between being a winning team and a losing team is desire. Right now the Mets seem to have no desire to finish strong, something Collins has been preaching during this second half slide. It’s not throwing his players under the bus; it’s holding them accountable by calling them out for playing lousy baseball.

This post is part of a progressive game blog as a joint venture between members of the St. Louis Cardinals chapter of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance and the NY Mets chapter of the BBA. Members of both chapters have been assigned an inning to write about on their blogs with your’s truly asked to write a Mets prospective  post game wrap up of today’s game. At the bottom of this post are the links to the other Cardinals/Mets bloggers involved in this endeavor

 

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the New York Mets, the organization has brought back many of the fans favorite things such as blue and orange as the team’s primary colors, the pinstripe uni and blue cap, blue outfield walls, Banner Day and last but not least, winning baseball.

The only way R.A. Dickey would have been able to top the historic no hitter tossed by Johan Santana last night would have been to pitch a perfect game. You know what? He came damn close.

Dickey scattered seven hits in a complete game shutout win over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5-0. Dickey has taken his game to another level this season. With the win today he is 8-1 with a 2.69 ERA and a head spinning 70 K in 73.2 IP, this from a pitcher who today threw his knuckleball at a Bugs Bunny- like 54 mph.

The Mets were led on offense by whom else? David Wright. The Mets have had a lot of firsts between last year and this year, the dearly departed Jose Reyes won the first (tainted) batting title ever by a Mets player last year and of course Johan Santana with the first no hitter in franchise history last night, so maybe we are looking at the first NL MVP award ever won by a Met with David Wright? The way this season is going never say never.

Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn, will be staring at the ceiling of his hotel room tonight, trying to figure out how the hell he gave up three runs in the Mets half of the second inning. Ike Davis led with the only solid hit of the inning, a single to right field. Fourth string shortstop Omar Quintanilla was hit on the left wrist with a pitch to make it first and second for the Mets, no one out. The faster than your average catcher, Josh Thole reached on an infield single and the Mets had the bags juiced with no one out.

When you look back after the Thole hit, Lynn should have been out of the inning and if he did escape unscathed and unscored upon this could have been a whole different ball game, alas the defensively changed Matt Adams botched a play on an R.A. Dickey ground ball hit by not catching a toss from second baseman Daniel Descalsco allowing Davis to score. Lynn got Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Andres Torres to ground out but instead of being down 1-0, runs scored on both outs leaving the Mets with a 3-0 lead and Lynn and the Cards trying to figure out what just happened.

The Mets tacked on two more runs on a wild pitch and a David Wright new Citi Field dimension home run.

There are still many amongst the ranks of Mets fans that have not seen the light with the 2012 Mets. These are not your “Willie Randolph, Jerry Manuel we couldn’t care less Mets” there is finally accountability and an esprit de corps in the Mets clubhouse led by field manager Terry Collins.  The toughest thing for a manager to do is getting his players to buy in to what he’s selling and in his second year at the managerial helm, the Mets are buying in big time. Eat your heart out Mark Zuckeneberg.

For those new to watching Mets baseball in 2012, you got a good view of the new Mets under Terry Collins on Friday night especially if you saw Collins post-game presser as he tried hard to hold his emotions in check when talking about the historic night.

Many of you Cardinals fans reading this post are Missourians hailing form the Show Me State. Well when it comes to the Mets, Mets fans are from the Prove It To Me State so far the proof is on the playing field.

During the off season Mets Executive Vice President David Howard met with few of the Mets Bloggers to discuss the season ahead and the festivities for the 50th anniversary season.  We talked about the low attendance numbers at Citi Field and Howard made a very interesting statement. He said there are a whole lot of Mets fans out there, millions of them but many of them are dormant Mets fans. What he was getting at is there are Mets out there who still root for the team but when they’re losing  they find it hard to come out to the ball park or watch on TV but when the team starts winning they come out of hibernation. After Santana’s no hitter Twitter blew up with so many Mets tweets that the top ten trending topics on Twitter were Mets related. Glad to see the dormant Mets fans come out of the cave.

And A Great Time Was Had By All At The NY Mets 50th Anniversary Conference

What a terrific day it was yesterday at the New York Mets 50th Anniversary Conference at Hofstra University. A big tip of my Mets cap goes to Greg Prince who work very hard to make the 3 day conference a huge success, and in the words of Yogi Berra, “made this day necessary” Dana Brand would be so proud of the conference and of you Greg.

I came away with this thought on the way home from Hofstra last night, the Skill Sets may hold the papers to the team, but it’s Mets fan who are the real owners and for that the whole Mets organization should be thankful.

It’s always fun to meet up with the Mets Blogger-ratzi at events like this especially my blogger panel teammates, John Coppinger and Taryn Cooper, as well as Shannon, Kerel, Michael, and the Mathews Callan and Artus . Let’s Go Mets!!!!!
