CAMP FIRE

That is the patch the Mets will wear this season in remembrance of Gary Carter. I’d still like to see all uniform personnel wear CARTER 8 uni tops for a game and auction them off for charity

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t be a Mets fan who feels Terry Collins is being a hard ass to Ruben Tejada for not getting to camp early and then complain that the team isn’t very good.

Collins is stressing to his team that they have to work harder than anyone else and be  focused better than anyone else if they are to succeed this season. You can see from the early interviews of TC down in St. Lonesome that he wants his team to stick it up all the naysayer’s asses and show that the Mets are a winning baseball team.

The maturation of Matt Harvey continues to be an early training camp story line. As Josh Thole has raved about Harvey’s pitch repertoire, the manager and coaches, especially Wally Backman, have raved about his willingness to get their advice on what he needs to do to reach the big league level. Sandy Alderson is on the record as saying Harvey will not break camp with the Mets but Harvey is determined to make that a difficult decision, it’s hard to get giddy over Matt Harvey.

Same for Jeurys Familia who along with Harvey was profiled in the NY Daily News today as two guys who are competing for a job in the big leagues but have grown close as teammates and hope to join the big league club together at some point this season.

It’s so early in spring training but from reading stories about the mood of the camp and camaraderie  of the players, the Mets are staring to give me a feeling that they could be baseball version of the New York Rangers.

If Jason Bay struggles against right handed pitching as he did last season, the more reason to root for Kirk Nieuwenhuis to make the team as a platoon partner for Bay in LF. No one in the front office will say it but I bet the leash on Bay is short this season especially if he struggles against rhp.

GOTTA GO TO MO’S TO GET A NFC CHAMPS HAT AND T SHIRT

Sorry for the lack of posting at the site the last couple of days. I spent my weekend at Camp No-Be-Bosco just outside of Blairstown, NJ on a camping trip that had everything you’d want in winter camp out, snow, cold and a 2AM run to the latrine, ahhhh……… yes the great outdoors. The camping trip and the New York Football Giants incredible post season (not to mention the best New York Rangers regular season in many an year and trying to come to grips that the great run of the Big 3 of the Boston Celtics looks over) run has greatly distracted me from the comings and goings of the New York Mets .

Again Eli Manning has proven you can be tough, fearless and a leader without being a rah-rah screamer.

I guess Tom Coughlin can make that big purchase he’s been putting off as he is the Giants head coach until he deiced he doesn’t want to be Giants head coach anymore. Who knows what move TC will make if the G-Men win the Super Bowl?

I’ll admit it, I never thought the Giants would go on this roll especially after the loss to the Redskins on December 18th  but thanks to the Jets and the 99 yard Victor Cruuuuuuuuuzzzz TD, which TC said was the turning point, I started  with the “what if’s” in my mind. But of course that dominant Mets fan gene that I possess always makes me brace for the worse.

With all the analysis that goes on about the NFL to the point you’re numb by game time, last night’s game broke it down to the games simplest form. If you turn the ball over multiple times and can’t convert 3rd downs on offence, good chance you’re going to lose. If you are plus in the takeaway column and convert those takeaways into points, chances are you’ll win the game.

Like a baseball team that is strong defensively up the middle is most successful, in the NFL you’re only as strong as your offensive and defensive lines. The Giants offensive line has been very good for the most part in keeping Eli Manning upright, but last night they allowed him to take a beating. Plus this OL has a tough time getting the running game going, albeit Brandon Jacobs could do better than he does. What has been the big push in this playoff run is the DL especially a star is born, Jason Pierre-Paul.  Without that DL playing at the level it has, which has taken the pressure off an injury riddled secondary, has led to a defensive resurgence that Giants love and cherish.

Saturday night the NY Chapter of the BBWAA held their annual dinner and Gary Carter was the recipient of the “You Got To Have Heart” Award which was accepted on his behalf by his children. Thinking of you Kid.

Lots of chatter about what cap Mike Piazza will wear on his Hall of Fame plaque. Piazza himself has said he wants to enshrined as a Met. Since he played more games as a Met (972) than a Dodger (726) it’s only right he wears a Mets cap on his plaque. I’m sure with Freddy Skill Sets being Uncle Bud’s favorite nephew the word will get to those in Cooperstown to etch that Mets cap on Piazza’ head.

As for the writers not voting Piazza into the Hall on the first ballot, I think they know if they don’t vote Piazza, they will end up like Murray Chass, just a broken down old bitter blogger grazing on a farm.

AND HE’S GOT BIG BALLS AND SHE’S GOT BIG BALLS…….

But The New York Rangers have the biggest, BALLS OF THEM ALL!!!

I am totally drained and hoarse from attending last night’s remarkable NY Rangers-Boston Bruins game at MSG. I haven’t been this exhausted from screaming at a sporting event since Johan Santana beat the Marlins on 9/27/08 to keep the Mets to keep their post season hopes alive.

The Rangers looked like the rigors of this playoff push combined with another back to back game would take its toll on the Blueshirts. When the score got to 3-0 Bruins, many of the MSG customers turned on the team with boos. I was very disappointed in the play of the team but I’m not a boo’er, I’m more of a sulker when things go bad and just slump in my seat. So there I slumped looking at my watch trying to figure what ferry to get to get me home in time to catch most of the UCONN-Butler game (from what I’ve read this morning, I didn’t miss much as both teams lived up to their canine nicknames) when Vinny Prospal scored for the Rangers to make it 3-1. I figured, if the Bruins score again to make it 4-1, I’ll head for the 1 train to South Ferry, but 7 minutes later Prospal scored again to cut the Boston lead to 1 goal.

Now all this time, in the row in front of us are four Bruins fans, three of them were respectful but one was just an out and out asshole, who stood after each Bruins goal with a beer in each hand proclaiming the Rangers wouldn’t make the post season. Now it’s one thing to come into enemy territory and root for your team, it’s another to act like an asshole and inflame the home team rooters, especially in the Blue Seats of MSG. As the Rangers started to score goal after goal, the Bruin fans slumped lower and lower into their seats. When the Brandon Dubinsky tied the score with three minutes and change left in the 3rd period, the Garden exploded and after the Gooooo-aaaaaa-llllll song was sung, the section pointed at Mr. Bruin and gave him the ASSSSSSSSSSSSSS-HHHHHHHHHOOOOOLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEE salute. When Michael Sauer scored the 4th and game winning goal, well, all hell broke loose.

Two guys about 6’4 by 6’4 come running into the row I’m in and start screaming at the obnoxious Bruin fan whose beer muscles seemed have been deflated, Mr. Bruin then turned around and told the Ranger fan to fuck off, next you know fists were flying and Garden Security pounced on both guys. When order was finally restored, I turned to my son and told him, “Welcome to 1979”

John Tortorella said it in his post-game presser, “this team has balls” not just balls but big brass balls.

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR DIALS

You can tell Alderson and Co. are new around here, they don’t understand that Mets fans need to read at least one news story about the team every day during the long, cold winter (are we only 2 days into winter? Aggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!) so when Sandy Alderson says, “there will be no players moves until sometime in January” HUH? In fact the Mets have shut down the AIA (Alderson Intelligence Agency) until after New Year’s. Uhhhhhh excuse me Mr. Alderson, sir. What do you expect us newly appointed Minsters of Information (formerly known as “bloggers” ) to do in the mean time? Sure I have the New York Choking Bastards Giants to follow this week against the Packers in a game that would put them in the playoffs, the hard working New York Rangers, now managed by the best hockey GM in the NYC Metro Area (it’s not that tough a title to win as Lou Lamerillo has been kidnapped and the Devils have been taken over by Matt Millen and the Islanders went out of business about 5 years ago) and of course my wonderful Boston Celtics (there is nothing better than the moment during last night’s C’s-Sixers game when Tommy Heinshon claimed he was going to blow up the refeeres room after the game last night due to officiating so bad I was waiting to hear Tommy say “this game has been Donaghy-ed”)  but it’s Mets news that sustains me.

I have a theory that Alderson is doing this on purposes; he is challenging his new Ministers of Information to show their creative side.  I came to this conclusion while reading this post on Amazin’ Avenue on how to program SNY to make it more Mets-sentric, a real thorn in the Mets fan side, the station has no original Mets programing. The sad part is there a tons of creative folks at SNY, especially the ones working on Mets Weekly, which SNY has destroyed from its original purpose, a show for Mets fans about Mets fans. Along with bring Mets Weekly back to its original focus, the suits at SNY should heed the programing advice brought up by James Kannengieser, especially a show with R.A. Dickey who would be great doing a spiritual talk show, where he quotes baseball scripture “sometimes we can question the role of the Baseball god, when we read from the Book of Durocherrotomy 19:69 “Thou who is a man of kindness, will undoubtedly never see the light of day” not always true. One can be kind and still be an assassin on the field, especially if your ball floats like a balloon in the wind”

The DocuMetries is an outstanding idea, especially now that the 50th Anniversary of the franchise is a season away. Think about a documentary on the birth of the team from the Dodgers and Giants leaving, to Robert Moses pushing Flushing Meadows as a stadium site to Mrs. Payson, Stengel, Hodges, and Seaver or one on the Tom Seaver Im-Perfect game with interviews of Seaver, Jerry Grote, Jimmy Quals and other players in that game? The Rise and Fall of Doc and Darryl? This franchise is a treasure trove of ideas for a disaster informative documentary.

WHY, SKILL SETS WHY?

So how was Christmas? Mine was outstanding but I have to work today so that sucks. I got a new NY Rangers jacket that I wanted. It has the big NEW YORK RANGERS crest on the back with the Stanley Cup years on the sleeve and was thrilled to open that on Christmas morning. So with all the hoopla yesterday I’m tired today and not really feeling like doing anything but I have work to do so I’ll just have this thought for the day.

The longer Manny Ramirez sits out on the free agent market the more anxious I get wanting the Mets to go out and grab him. I know the Skill Sets have said “No Way” and now it seems Omar is still interested in grabbing him but is finding resistance from the owners. Now if that is the Skill Sets position that the Mets are not players for Manny’s service I feel they have an obligation to Mets fans to explain as to why they are against this move.

Is it due to the monetary obligation? So far the best public offer has been the Dodgers 2yr/$44mil. So if you offered Manny/Boras say 2yr/$50mil with an option on a third year would the Dodgers top that? I doubt it. The only other serious bidder would be the Angels (although the Highlanders could bid just to show how they feel they are better than everyone else, “Hey, Pee Wee Cashman why do you wash your car with Evian”? Because that’s how us Highlanders roll motherfucker!) and even with their financial problems if the Skill Sets can’t afford to pay Manny that kind of coin then maybe Bernie Madoff should own the team.

If it’s Manny’s Manny Being Manny attitude then I call bullshit, because right know the attitude of the New York Mets sucks as they have been labeled as “chokers”, “losers” and “frauds” and no matter what you think of Manny Ramirez he is none of those. In fact if he would sign with the Mets a collective “OH SHIT” would be heard through out the National League none louder than in the Land of Cheesesteaks. Everyone on the Mets can be intimidated (except of Johan Santana) but Manny is never intimidated. In fact Manny is feared and no one on the Mets (except of Johan Santana) is feared

The longer Manny is on the market the more the pressure is on the Skill Sets to back up their words. Didn’t Jeffey Skill Sets say there is no budget and that even with the Madoof rip off didn’t he boast that the Skill Sets still had plenty of scratch? (go look it up like I told you I’m tired and now the more I write this post the more fucking cranky I’m getting) So back it  up Jeffey, Back it the fuck up and show me some balls and sign Manny Ramirez. The Mets are in dire need of a right handed bat and right in front of you is the best righty bat in the world and all it takes is money, money that you bragged about is still flowing into your pockets, that can secure this much needed bat. Manny is not a luxury item he is a neccisity.

I’m not on a rant because of the Highlander spending spree as my sights are on the  Phillies. That’s the team to beat and not only do I want to beat them I want them to pay for mocking the Mets and Mets fans. Yeah that’s right. Holiday sprit my ass. I want teams to look at that 2009 schedule and swallow hard and say “OH SHIT THE METS ARE COMING TO TOWN”.   You want to hate the Mets? Let’s give them something to hate a middle of the batting order with Manny-Beltran-Wright how’s that for hate?

IT’S A HOCKEY DAY!!!!!!!!

It’s now time to at least have some diversion after the disappointing Mets season to welcome back the New York Rangers and the NHL season as the Rangers take on the Tampa Bay Mullets in Prague today. I’m looking forward to this Rangers season as Ranger fans have no real idea what kind of team we have. There is youth and more speed and some very good experienced vets with Capt Drury, Scott Gomez and Markus Nasland on board and the great King Henrik in goal but the consenus about this team is they could be one of the biggest stories in the league this year or they could struggle all I know is I can’t wait until 12 noon today.
