Fare Thee Well R. A. Dickey

Sorry for the lack of posting the last week but I had tons of work to handle and when I did find time to sit down and compose some thoughts on the New York Mets the news from Newtown Connecticut of the mass killings of little children and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School unfolded and suddenly whatever Mets news that was out there was of no interest to me at all, which is why this past Saturday was just the kind of day I needed.

When I found out that Greg Prince who along with Jason Fry co-author the great Mets blog Faith and Fear in Flushing was having a get together at Foley’s NY to celebrate his joining the half century club (the more cranky middle aged Mets fans the better) and his new book The Happiest Recap I replied immediately that I would attend. Not only was it the great tonic to keep my mind off the tragedy in Newtown but it reaffirmed my love for the NY Mets by being in a room jammed back with people of my faith, real honest to goodness die hard Mets fans. How devoted were the fans in attendance?  We saluted our beloved Mets and pledged our allegiance to the Orange and Blue by singing a rousing rendition of Meet the Mets, the complete version of Meet the Mets, with butcher, the baker and the people on the street.  I get goose bumps just typing that. No doubt though, Mets fans are the most underappreciate fan base in sports.

Did you really think the break up between the Mets and R.A. Dickey was going to amicable? Let me just put my cards on the table right here, if you have been a frequent visitor to this site you know how much I respect and admire R.A. Dickey. I have been fortunate to meet Dickey and to interview him and I’ve found to be fascinating and a man of class and intellect that made spending time with him a fabulous experience.  But as much of a fan as I am of Dickey’s, this trade that sends him and Josh Thole and a prospect  to Toronto for Travis d’Arnuad , Noah Syndergaard, John Buck and a prospect is one that was absolutely necessary in the getting the Mets back to relevancy .

Sandy Alderson does not act on emotion; he acts on facts, on research from both statistical analytical and scouting departments. He is here to rebuild the NY Mets organization that when he arrived was a shambles in all departments but especially from a player development side. This will be the second time in his three years as Mets GM that he outlasted a desperate rival to pluck a top prospect for a player on the back nine of his career but one that could be the missing piece to their prosperity. Both R.A. Dickey and Carlos Beltran, who as older players are much more useful to teams in contention than one under renovation (sounds better than rebuilding don’t you think?)  were flipped for two of the top prospects in all of baseball in Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud.  We now have a future.

Back to the nastiness that has surfaced since this deal was deemed all but complete. Mets management, as has been a tradition around here since the days of M.Donald Scumbag, have found ways to try to embarrass players who are leaving but end up embarrassing themselves.  I have no doubt that there was jealousy amongst those who locker with Dickey in the Mets clubhouse. I’ve been told by people I trust that was the case. To me it says more about the people who are doing the bad mouthing than it does about Dickey. Think about the typical ballplayer in a locker room. Most of them are into playing video games, hunting, golf, and playing loud hip-hop music while sitting naked pursuing the latest edition of Swank.  Then you have the anti-Neanderthal ballplayer in R.A. Dickey, who not only reads books but writes them, a best seller no less. He also raises awareness to causes like sexual abuse of children of which he was a victim, going into schools to read and donate books to underprivileged kids. Having a role in a movie that documents his journey from a #1 draft pick who struggled through the system and then reinvented himself and persevered when he was told time and time again to give it up but never gave in to the naysayers and worked harder every time he was doubted to become one of the very best of his craft, to the point where he was honored with the highest award a pitcher can received, the CY Young. Oh and guess where Dickey will be right after Christmas? In India with his two daughters to make and distribute friendship bracelets for children who are abuse victims. Where did I learn this? At the Mets holiday party because unlike Ken Davidoff, I WAS THERE!!!!! And heard Dickey talk of his holiday plan. While I’m on the topic of that holiday party, let me set the record straight. Both Dickey and Ike Davis were helpers to John Franco who played Santa Claus. The media was closed off from the party proceedings by a black fabric partition. When Dickey and Ike were done entertaining the kids, they were brought in to the media area. No children were harmed during the interview process and I doubt any of them cared about hearing about contract extensions as they enjoyed eating hot dogs and opening up presents.  Dickey was asked about the stalemate in negotiations and spoke candidly if the press and media can’t handle that then they deserve to be locked in a room with Jon Niese.

So who would have a problem with people wanting to celebrate a man who has fought so much adversity and rose to the top of his profession? Maybe a bunch of players who fade every August, September and October for the last four seasons. There are not a lot of players with intestinal fortitude in that Mets clubhouse. It could be that some of those who fail to rise up and contribute dislike Dickey because he makes them look bad. How would you feel if you were sitting the bench due to fatigue, while a 38 year old takes the mound with a torn stomach muscle that would need off season surgery and fights his way to lead his team to victory?

I do have hope that this trade will start a spiral of ridding the team of petulant posers,  pie throwers and the charter members of the bitch and moan club. The Mets are losing a stand-up guy in R.A. Dickey but that doesn’t mean we have to stop rooting for him. The Blue Jays come to the South Bronx for a four game set from April 25-April 28, how it would be great for Mets fans to show up if Dickey gets a start to express our appreciation for all he’s done as a Met on and off the field. Oh and it will piss off the Highlanders and their fans as well.

NY Mets Could Contend in 2013 But They Won’t

We are somewhat back to normal, whatever normal is. Roof is back on and today my ceiling should be finished and tomorrow I have someone coming in to steam clean and deodorize my carpet and couches just in time for the next storm tomorrow afternoon/night.

I’m starting to catch up on some of the Mets news of the last week or so and I see a lot of good opportunity for the Mets to add some players that bring a of of what’s missing on this team, unfortunately these moves will take money something the Mets don’t have a lot of and that’s a damn shame because I think with a couple of key signings the Mets would morph into the SF Giants East.

I’ve said from the end of the season that the organization has an acceptance of failure as we’ve seen through the second halves of the last four seasons. This happens when you have a lack of battle tested players who know what it takes to win. From looking over the free agent list, there are players available who fit that bill such as:

A.J. Pierzynski would be #1 on my wish list. I’ve been a fan of Pierzynski’s for a long time and have hoped the Mets would have traded for him as well, now here he is sitting right there on the free agent front ready to picked by the Mets who are the neediest of teams when it comes to catching. You not only fill your huge need for a front line catcher but you add a guy with a World Series ring and a lot of snark and the Mets are sorely in need of snark.  How would a catching combo of Pierzynski and David Ross look in blue and orange?  Yes I know I’m asking too much.

I know we all hate Shane Victorino but if he were in a Mets uni that would all change for me. Please don’t give me he was Phuck Phace as a reason for the Mets not to sign him, again he has a World Series ring and is an annoying little prick and that’s what the Mets need both a winner and annoying pricks. I’d take a shot at using him as the everyday center fielder even though he’s not the center fielder he used to be, he’d still be a major upgrade over Andres Torres and don’t think if he became a Met he wouldn’t  ramp it up when the Mets take on the Phuck Phaces.

Cody Ross, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Cody Ross. Word out of Boston is Ross is looking for 3yrs/$25 mil a bit steep but then again it’s an negotiation and one the Mets should get involved in. Ross again comes with a winning pedigree and an edge which I know I’m sounding like a broken record, the Mets sorely need. An outfield of Bay/Duda in LF, Victorino in CF and Ross in RF with Ike, Murph, Tejeda, Wright and Pierzynski added to the starting rotation and a couple of relievers added in make the Mets a true contender in NL. Sadly the odds of these moves happening as nil

The Ghosts of Coogan’s Bluff Are Smiling

The Marco Scutaro Fairy Tale continues as he is not only headed to the World Series with his NL Pennant winning SF Giants teammates but he’s bringing the NLCS MVP Trophy along with him. WOW!! Simply WOW!!

As I said yesterday I’ll be rooting for the Giants to beat the Tigers who as Greg Prince eloquently posted on Faith and Fear in Flushing will be meeting for the first time ever in a World Series which is astonishing since both teams have been around for well over 100 years.  I could not help but sit and stare at the TV watching 45,000+ sing and dance in a monsoon of a rain storm with a smile on my face as I dreamed about the day when I can feel that exaltation again about the NY Mets.  For those too young to have experienced the mid 80’s Mets and that championship season of 1986, that crowd at ATT Park was us back in the day but ramped up more than 1,000 decibels or more.  We made enough of a racket and disruption to make Shea Stadium literally rock and roll and then add in the anarchist behavior of the 80’s as we ran rough shod on Pete Flynn’s landscaped lawn to grab a souvenir slice of sod hoping that the rent a cops didn’t yank me by my pony tail.

When I watched the scene in San Francisco last night it just reinforced why I love baseball and of course the Mets, I’ve been in the middle of the celebratory scrum and I’d love to be in the middle of another one al least I won’t have to worry about getting pulled by the pony tail.

I have no problem what so ever about the club bring back Mike Pelfrey on an incentive laden contract for 2013. I know many Mets fans have jump off the Big Pelf bandwagon but I think he can be a contributor out of the pen if not the 5th starter on the team next season.

As for Andres Torres, what’s the decision he has got to go. If Torres is retained for 2013 I will be highly pissed off. Even if a deal can’t made for a center fielder, either Kirk Nieuwenhuis or Matt den Dekker would be a solid upgrade over Torres. I can’t believe this even a discussion amongst the Mets decision makers.

This is a picture of the NY Giants of 1888 who defeated the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in the exhibiton known as the World Series. The man in the middle is Giants manager Big Jim Murrite. When you’re named Big Jim odds are you don’t tolorate too much bullshit!

End of the Line in The South Bronx ?

I miss good ol’ Stump

As a baseball fan you can’t ask for more that this first round division series has given us. Four series all going five games is a baseball fans nirvana especially for those of us who detest the NY Highlanders. It’s a good thing I have unlimited texting in my phone plan since my Highlander fan pals were relentless in their venting to me even though they know I’m rooting hard for the Orioles.

All season my Highlander buddies spoke about how the power display their team put on this season was good for plenty of oooo’s and ahhhhhhh’s but come the post season they will have to be able to manufacture some runs. Now me as a Mets fan rooting for a team that has the power of a 10 watt bulb, andwith the distain I look at customers at the bank who complain that the teller gave them all $100’s and $50’s when cashing a check,  just wants to say why you no good greedy bastards.  But what do you know; the Highlanders have had a world of trouble pushing a run across the plate with good old fashion small ball. The long ball though has saved their season and when you get past the dramatic way Raul Ibanez went about tying and winning Game 3, if not for those two knocks, the fish wraps and social media would be in a three alarm tizzy over the demise of the Highlanders.

Even if the Bronx Bastards win today and I think they will as CC Sabathia is only second to Derek Jeter on this team to show up when needed (sorry Ibanez still has a Philadelphia  size horse shoe up his ass) and I think both of them will find a way to win this game, it safe to say those of the Highlander persuasion need to reflect on this series and if they are honest and clear thinking which is hard to find in that demographic , they will admit the days of champagne baths and championships the next few years will be few and far between. I have news for those of you in denial Highlander fans, the team you love to mock; the NY Mets are in better shape organizational wise than your Highlanders and that’s counting our broke ass ownership.

Hal Steinbrenner is no chip off the block, where Daddy George would spend to mask mistakes and take on contracts no matter what; Prince Hal has one goal in mind, to bring the payroll down to where he’s no longer paying into the MLB welfare system known as revenue sharing.  With a minor league system barren of talent what will the Highlanders do? Does ownership have confidence in Pee Wee Cashman that he can rebuild the talent base a la Stick Michael and Buck Showalter? Why do I give a shit? Well, until this post season is done with, the Mets won’t be making moves so I guess I have nothing better to do but to eavesdrop on my neighbors who I thought had it all and find out they just might have less than me.

The Day The Magic Was Back

When people ask me why I root for the NY Mets, I tend to pause and try to form the answer in my head but I find that it’s too complicated to explain to the uninitiated. Not just fans of other teams but mostly to those who are not baseball fans at all. Yesterday would have been the perfect day to take all the non-baseball fans I know to Citi Field and expose them to that amazing phenomenon we know and love as Mets baseball.

Yesterday was a day of pure love and total affection for a team and a player who has won over our hearts. No talk of claw backs, bridge loans, trades and overall angst of another losing season. No this day was a throwback to the kind of parties we used to throw in our old house where no one cared if you spilled some beer on the floor or scattered empty packages of Guldens mustard and your cup holder was the cracked concrete under your seat not some fancy schmanzy do-hickey thingy in front of your seat.  Yesterday was a day where Mets fans said just because we moved on up to a dee-lux ballpark in sky, that we forget where we came from and it was about time we started acting like the who we are loyal, boisterous, opinionated and most importantly knowing how to have a good time at the ballpark baseball fans that we are.

The day was about R.A. Dickey and the spotlight deserves to shine brightly on Dickey who I have had the honor of meeting a few times at Citi Field and he mesmerizes me during each and every visit I’ve had with him, and it was about who we are as Mets fans. R.A. Dickey is why we are Mets fans. Dickey’s story is our story; it’s the essence of Metsdom.  Once a first round pick ready to sign for 7 figure bonus until an x-ray shows his right elbow is missing a valuable piece of tendon which knocks that bonus down a couple of figures.  He knocked around the big leagues for a while but without much success, Dickey was ready to throw in the towel and try a new profession but something told him to try one more time. He learn a pitch that no one respects and writers belittle him that he is trying to get hitters out with smoke and mirrors but the critics are ignorant to the time and sweat equity you’ve put into making this pitch work for you.  Other men who have had success with this pitch answer your call for help and you not only master the pitch but get to the point where the pitch and your personal perseverance pays off where you are now consider the best starting pitcher in your league.  Forget Hollywood, that’s Flushing Baby!!!

That’s us in a nut shell, why is it that during the bleakest of times during a down season we all see a vision in our heads of Tug McGraw slamming his glove into his thigh and the words YA GOTTA BELIEVE!! Flashing all around in out subconscious? I imagined Casey, Mrs. Payson, Gil, and Tug looking down yesterday at the scene at Citi Field Casey telling Mrs. Payson  “Amazin’ Amazin’ Amazin’” and Gil speaking out loud “see what some toughness and believing in one another can achieve”? and Tug hovering over by the seats in center field with the crew from the 7 Line yelling “Can I get a beer here”?

I’m sure many of the younger members of this Mets team was surprised by the passion and exuberance  of the crowd yesterday for many of them it was there first time seeing the true blue and orange Mets fan doing his and her thing. Oh they have seen big opening day crowds but opening day is mostly amateur hour as a lot of the suits and ties think it’s good day too to take the corporate tickets and act like assholes.  Closing day is where you separate the posers from the die hards.

What a difference from last year’s final game at Citi Field to this year. Last year was freezing with a cold drizzle and there were maybe 2,000 folks at the game but we were there to see Jose Reyes win a batting crown and to thank him for being Jose Reyes since the odds were good he would be an ex-Met in 2012. Reyes of course reciprocated our coming out to cheer him on by bunting and then bidding the game and the Mets fond farewell. It left us stunned and angry.

Yesterday after morning rain the sun came out it was a bit muggy but not uncomfortable and the man we came to see was not only happy to see us but thank us for our undying support. So it was much better closing day at Citi Field than last year and hopefully closing day in 2013 will be even better after winning a World Series championship. Am I out of mind? No but after yesterday I just Gotta Believe!.

The Eddie Kranepool Society Congratulates David Wright on Becoming the NY Mets All-Time Hits Leader

I’m not going to lie, it was always cool to look at the section of the NY Mets media guide that houses the all-time Mets records and see Ed Kranepool’ name in the top spot as the Mets all-time hits leader. After last night though Steady Eddie has been relegated to the second all-time spot surpassed by David Wright and his squib single in the 3rd inning last night.

Kranepool has been coming to the games of this recent home stand to see Wright take his spot and according to Wright Eddie has been his biggest supporter:

“Eddie came and saw me before the game, wished me luck, and reiterated the fact that he’s happy for me and excited for me, and that meant a lot to me,” Wright said. “I’m very proud and humbled at the same time.”

So with that let offer my heartiest congratulations to David Wright on the occasion of earning the title the NY Mets All-Time Hits Leader.

Please Support the Fund Raiser for Shannon Forde

Last week at our monthly Met Bloggers night at Citi Field the friendly face I always look for was right there in the conference room where you see Terry Collins before and after every game. Shannon Forde, the Mets Senior Director of Media Relations came over to give me and the other bloggers a big welcome.

Shannon and Danielle Parilleo the Mets Director of Communications are the Mets bloggers den mothers. They take us into the places we’ve all dreamed about being in, the managers press conference, on the field for batting practice, arranging players for us to interview and assuring Jay Horowitz that we are not bad people. It’s people in the organization like Shannon and Danielle that make me root harder for this team to win because they work so hard they deserve a World Series ring as much as any player.

While watching BP last week at Citi Field myself and Ed Marcus went over to say hi to Shannon and tell her how much we missed her at the last bloggers meet up. Shannon has that personality that just makes you want to hang out with her to the point where she is much more interesting to talk to than any of the players, the same players by the way who seem to have much love and admiration for her since they know firsthand how hard she works at her craft. Her work at Citi Field is just a part of what she does as she is a mom and a wife and handles all those responsibility flawlessly and with her trademark smile.

It was while we were hanging out by the Mets dugout that Shannon told Ed and me that she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. At that point both of our knees kind of buckled. But leave it to Shannon to stay positive and tell us she’s going to fight this and beat it and with the great support group she has both with the Mets and within her family, I have no doubt that she will beat this insidious disease and continue to be one of the best and most important members of the NY Mets and continue to lead a bunch of nomad bloggers around Citi Field.

To support and give back to Shannon for all she has done for so many, her friends have organized a fund raiser for her at the Westmount Country Club in Woodland Park NJ on Thursday night November 1st for 7PM to 11PM. Tickets for the dinner are $100 and that includes dinner dancing a cocktail hour and open bar. From 7:30PM to 9:00PM that evening, there will be an autograph session featuring Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, John Franco, Bobby Ojeda, Edgardo Alfonzo, Al Leiter, Ed Charles and Eddie Kranepool. For $250 you get to meet with these members of Mets Royalty and get an autograph as well.

If you cannot make it to the dinner you can still make a donation. All the information is at Hope Shines For Shannon.

Devastation

How much ranting and raving can I do? I left a good amount of anger on Twitter last night as the NY Mets added another chapter in this embarrassing season.

When asked if his team has quit, Terry Collins refused to let his inner thoughts public. After a pause, he told Kevin Burkhardt to go ask the players that question. Of course that statement alone says that Collins believes there are some on the team that have thrown in the towel. He even mentioned something about conduct in the dugout and then held up Juan Pierre as the guy who should be the Mets players role model as a guy “who plays the game the right way”.

The 2012 NY Mets do not play the game the right way, they are not a motivated bunch who maybe in their hearts want to win but their actions on the field say they don’t  or maybe a better way of saying it is, they can’t. You could be the biggest rah-rah, run through a brick wall player but if you lack major league talent all the hustle and heart doesn’t mean a damn thing and this Mets team suffers from a serious deficiency in talent.

I don’t know how Terry Collins and this coaching staff escape this disaster without termination or re-assignment.  I’m starting to think my prediction of Collins getting re-assigned to a job in the front office in the minor league or scouting department will come to fruition.  Collins has tried to protect his players and in my opinion to a fault, where I start to question his credibility. I’m a Terry Collins fan and I feel any organization that has him in their baseball ops is a plus but he just could not get this team to play motivated or fundamental baseball. It’s a shame but there really is no way to justify brining Collins and this staff back in 2013.

Same for David Wright, it’s time for the Mets and Wright to go their separate ways. It’s not Wright’s fault he has gone above and beyond what any player in the history of the Mets has done for this organization. He is a gentleman and a fine baseball player but the best thing for him career wise and the Mets organizational wise is to move on. Sure the fangirls will weep and the lunatic fringe will go ape shit stupid but it makes baseball and business sense to trade Wright and allow him to pursue that World Series ring he craves. It won’t happen here in NY. I would have no problem with Wright getting dealt to our arch rivals Braves or Phillies but would rather see him go to either the Dodgers, Angels or Blue Jays because this organization is so devoid of immediate talent that you have to have to throw emotion out the window and make the best deal possible with the highest percentage of return. Sandy Alderson and his front office have a huge job in front of them this winter to not just make the 2013 Mets competitive but he has to fortify the upper levels of the minor league system so injuries or ineffective play is not a death knell as it was this season.

In a perfect world the Wilpon’s would sell the team and live happily ever after in a beach cabana at Del Boca Vista Phase II but the sad part of their reign as owners, they  have made myself and the majority of Mets fans root for them to fail financially.  As much as I detest their stewardship of the team I love, I hate that they put me in a position where I want them to go broke to force a sale of the team.  Since Nelson Doubleday was bought out of his share of the club, the Wilpon/Sterling Equities leadership has been an unmitigated disaster. If the Mets were a publicly held company, the shareholders would have run Fred, Jeff and Saul out of town on a rail. Bottom line, if Fred Wilpon really loves the Mets, he’d sell them to an ownership group that has the capital and vision to make the Mets the first class organization this fan base deserves.
