NY Mets Notes for 4-1-13

A few Opening Day notes form the NY Mets:

Last Met to hit a leadoff home run on opening day was Kaz Matsui on 4-6-04 at Turner Field

In the history of MLB the NY Mets have the best opening day winning percentage of all time at .647 (33-18)

David Wright has had at least one hit in every opening day game he’s played in for the Mets since his debut in 2005

There has been only one Mets Grand Slam hit on opening day and that was by Todd Hundley in Colorado on 4-26-1995

Happy Birthday to Daniel Murphy (#Imwith28 who turns 28) and Rusty Staub (Le Grand Orange) who turns 69 years old and will throw out the first pitch of today’s game.

The Mets will honor the first responders who did outstanding work during Hurricane Sandy.

METS FANDOM: ONCE YOU’RE IN, YOU CAN’T GET OUT

David Brooks has an op-ed piece in today’s NY Times trying to explain to those not of our Blue and Orange persuasion, that once you hitch your fan wagon to the New York Mets, you’re hooked for life.  This paragraph really does sum up what we as Mets fans believe:

So I’ll die a Mets fan, exaggerating their potential, excusing their deficiencies. This week, in Florida, I even detected new virtues in the team. In the early days, the Mets were lovable losers, then miraculous winners, then, in the 2000s, big-spending disappointments. Now they are young and frisky, enthusiastic and charming. I’ll enjoy following this team and exaggerating its promise. I have no choice but to love the Mets. Just as I have no choice but to hate the Phillies.

Brooks is totally on target about this edition of the Mets, they’re an easy bunch to root for.

STEADY EDDIE AS HE GOES

Ed “RustyJr” Marcus posts to day that Ed Kranepool has finished in his Top 50 Mets of All Time Series. While Ed is my top Mets player of all time I knew he wouldn’t crack the top 5 but I was hoping for a top 10 finish.

Kranepool still leads the club all time in games played as a Met (1853) At Bats (5436) Hits (1418) and Total Bases (2047) and many Mets fans today have either never seen him play or really know who he is so I guess a 13th place finish is quite good for an original Met who played his whole career in blue and orange.

HEY BIG SPENDER, SPEND A LITTLE DIME ON SOME DRAFT PICKS

The Skill Sets went over the slot to sign LHP Steve Matz. YOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAYYYYYY

The Skill Sets spent the least amount of money on this years draft picks. UUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

If that doesn’t some up the Skill Sets Era it’s those two sentences. Just when you think their potty trained, they shit their pants.

An excellent post on the state of the Mets minors and the lack of aggressiveness can be found here at Productive Outs and Cracker Jacks.

Our only hope is, from all accounts, John Ricco is a sharp dude, maybe he can get through to Jeffey that the draft and farm system are the life blood of a sports organization. Maybe he could put together a flash card presentation showing how the  Rays or the Angels have built pennant contenders.

Or better yet, if Ricco can pursued Jeffey to do what he does best and cash his pay check from his daddy’s real esate business the better for the world of Blue and Orange

TAKE HEART METS FANS YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Are you a Mets fan that feels down and out with this awful season? Well, you’re not alone my friend as there are plenty of other Disciples of the Blue and Orange that feel the same way. At a time like this you should not be alone with your depressing thoughts and that is why Greg Prince of Faith and Fear in Flushing and Jon Springer of Mets By The Numbers are the Mets fans Samaritans and have put together AMAZIN’ TUESDAYS at TWO BOOTS RESTAURANT (384 Grand St Manhattan) to soothe our souls and fill our bellies with beer and pizza and talk about our favorite baseball team and maybe plan a coup of $iti Field (well maybe not a coup but after a few cold Rheingold’s who knows what could happen)

So come out this Tuesday Night July 21st  at 7PM for the first installment of AMAZIN’ TUESDAY believe you need to get out and you’ll feel better for it.

HELLO MUDDA, HELLO FATTA HERE I AM AT CAMP AQUAHONGA

Greetings from the wilderness and from the looks of things I’m not missing much from our boys in Blue and Orange.

Reading the post on other sites (sorry I can’t link the sites as I’m not only pressed for time but the internet connection is so bad I’ve named it WILPON) and there looks like there will be a big fan revolt come September.

The bulls eye is squarley on Omar’s back and it everytime J-Man speaks after a loss he sticks another dagger in Minaya’ back.

Manuel’s mantra now is we will do this with pitching and defense and tells everyone this is all I’ve got and I’m making the best of it.

The more I see the more it looks like there may need to be an organizational cleansing on the horrizon.

go to go I have wood to chop (He’s a lumber Jack and he’s ok……….)
