LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METROPOLITANS

All of NYC is wrapped up in the Jets run to the Super Bowl (47 % of all the television sets in the Metro NY area were tuned to the Jets-Chargers game Sunday, that’s about 10 mil TV’s WOW!!!) so Mets news is fighting for space in the NY sports media but there is a few items of interest:

If you listen to Pro Baseball Central last Thursday you heard the song Metropolitans that I played to start the show. It’s a punk/garage version of Meet The Mets and it should be the 8th inning song played at $iti Field. But of course Mets management are tragically un-hip so it won’t happen, but it will be a staple of Pro Baseball Central. Check out the band who wrote and performs the song the 45 Adapters at their website and check out their new EP “Not One More Day”

The Mets are going to Louisiana to checkout the workout of Ben Sheets. There are about a dozen teams looking a Sheets but the Mets may have a bit of an inside track. Sheets’ named his son Seaver after Tom Terrific.

Art Shamsky’ new website is up and running and if you’re a long time Mets fan you’ll enjoy the features on the site.

I would love to have Eric Byrnes on the Mets. A guy off injury who plays balls to the wall type of game that the Mets sorely need and he’s a very good outfielder. But I doubt it will happen. Makes too much sense to sign him.

BROKESTERS R US

Been away for a couple a days so trying to get on track with some Mets news and other minutia:

NEWS: FREDDY SKILL SETS METS ARE NOT FOR SALE!

You know what,  if this is true then Bernie Madoff did a real half assed job of stealing. If you’re going to rip off rich people then damn it leave them fucking destitute. First I’m calling bullshit to all this “the Skill Sets are in good shape financially and the Mets are not for sale” Yeah right, that’s why they are selling off players and taking back cash like they were empty Budweiser cans. That’s why they would rather trade off Billy Wagner as to not have him take arbitration and then get stuck with him for millions of dollars. That’s why the payroll will go DOWN next season. That’s why Omar Minaya is now a “cheaper to keep her” rather than divorce her GM and the whole inept front office will be back for the same reason. Hire Bobby Valentine? Are you nuts? He would want to be paid in American currency not Mr. Mets bucks. So you will get another season of Jerry Manuel’ stand up act and the Bingo Traveling All Stars in 2010. Oh yeah , please get your season ticket renewals in soon or Freddy Skill Sets will have to hitch hike home from Aspen.

NEWS: JOSE REYES MAY NEED SURGERY

The shocking part of this story is the Mets medical staff found out now and not the night before opening day 2010. Around here that’s called progress.

NEWS: HIGHLANDERS CLAIM CHRIS CARTER FROM RED SOX WHO WAS HEADED TO THE METS

Look, it was the right move for the Highlanders as it forces the Red Sox to keep Carter on the 40 man roster and not free up a space for another pitcher (Paul Byrd?) but it’s still a scumbag move by the home office of scumbags, the Highlanders. It doesn’t change the Billy Wagner deal but it does hurt the Mets as they wanted to see what they have in Carter as either a first baseman or an outfielder. I’m sure Daniel Murphy and Angel Pagan just became big Highlander fans.

NEWS: PAT MISCH IMPRESSIVE IN FIRST START AS A MET

Finally a bright light in this dismal season as Pat Misch pitched a beauty at Wrigley yesterday. Misch pounded the shit out the strike zone and got groundball out after groundball out. He only struck out two batters but he threw strikes and pitched to contact and let his fielders do the work, outstanding job. But of course this being the Mets of 2009 a good job gone bad is the norm but it’s tough to get on Brain Stokes who has be terrific at the back end of the pen that last few weeks but I guess when you’re used nearly everyday this will happen.

NEWS: DJ AM THROWS OUT FIRST PITCH AT METS GAME, FOUND DEAD A WEEK LATER

I’m starting to wonder why friends are offering me Mets ticket for free.

NEWS: SCOTT KAZMIR WEARS A HALO

So now what do I do with my RAYS KAZMIR 19 t-shirt? I’m thinking of having a week where I wear all the shirts and jerseys of players no longer on those teams. For the Mets I have ALOMAR 12, VAUGHN 42, ALPHONSO 13. Then I have Giants jersey SHOCKEY 80 Rangers JAGER 68 it’s like my own little old timers day.

The trade of Kazmir is not a shock as the rumblings have been there that Kaz and pitching coach Jim Hickey did not see eye to eye and that was proven when Kaz went to Rick Peterson for help after his shoulder injury. No one claimed Kazmir as his contract and injury record make it a prohibited claim but that never stops Artie Moreno of the Angels, now there is an owner committed to winning.

NEWS: METS STILL IN THE BRYCE HAPER SWEEPSTAKES

Well, maybe. The Mets are 12 games behind the Nats for the worst record in baseball and 11 back of KC for the next spot. After that there are seven teams all jockeying for a spot in the 2010 First Year Player Draft Jamboree. I don’t see either Washington or KC giving the big bucks to Harper. The one team that would worry me is Baltimore who if the standings finish like they are today, would pick 3rd and might meet the demands of Harper. So we have to root for more loses Mets fans so new owner Jay-Z can make his big splash at his new job of Mets CEO.

JERRY’S HEAD GAMES

I’m starting to realize that I am more of a fan of Jerry Manuel the person than I am of Jerry Manuel the manager. Most nights win or lose Manuel is usually a cool cat at his press conference as he never gets rattled by questions and he takes his time giving an answer to the tough inquiries. In that, Manuel reminds me of St Joseph of Torre in his handling of the media and that is a major challenge for any manager or head coach in this town.  But some of the tactical moves that Manuel has made on this road trip and in the recent weeks have be befuddled.

Take last night. When Jeremy Reed was obtained in the Putz deal this past winter we were told he was as good as Endy Chavez at bat and in the field. So if Reed is such a good outfielder why was he playing first base last night while the defensively challenged Daniel Murphy  was put in left field. I swear I was in a daze for the first inning trying to figure the logic here and sure enough the first batter for the Hollywood Bums, Juan Pierre hits a ball to left that Murphy botched. Just stunning.

Why not just leave Murphy at first base and tell him it’s all yours until Delgado gets back maybe it would relive a bit of pressure off this kid because this is not the same Daniel Murphy we fell in love with. The Murphy kid I saw last year and early this year does not get picked off first base like an inept little leaguer. How many times have we heard Keith Hernandez say that “someone taught Murphy the right way to play baseball”?

Same with second base. If Ramon Martinez is the best we have to play back up infielder then we’re in trouble. I know that Castillo has sucked at the plate lately so if you’re going to give him the night off the let the Latin Joe McEwing (Fernando Tatis) play second he can’t do any worse than Martinez.

THE HE-MAN METS HATERS CLUB

I come here today to defend Jerry Manuel and his decision to let Fernando Tatis hit away in the 8th inning yesterday. Technically you J-Man killers are right that is a sacrifice situation but I want you to step back and take a deep breath and think about the old saying sometimes you have to lose a battle to win the war.

 

I agree with what John Harper wrote today and with Keith Hernandez who said on the air that as much as the bunt was in order he understood why J-Man let Tatis swing away. What I couldn’t believe was the nasty narrow thinking of Mets fans that I heard on WFAN afterwards with some nit wit who refers to himself as Adam the Bull, another in that stable of mediocrity that FAN calls “talent”  killing Manuel for the sake of staying on the good side of the yahoo faction of Metsfandom.

 

Before you take Manuel to task remember this. Last year Tatis was one of the best Mets hitters in clutch situation and his timely bat was sorely missed down the stretch when he blew out his shoulder. Tatis was one of the few success stories on the ‘07 team and was rewarded with the Comeback Player of the Year Award. He then went from a steady platoon outfielder to a player buried waiting for his number to get called. Yesterday it was called as he played 2nd base a spot he’s played twice in his career. Tatis is a pro and a dream for a manager. You know he’s is burning to play but he won’t rock boat, the definition of a team guy. So J-Man has to show Tatis that he is still the player he thinks he is so being that its April and the team has had a problem early hitting in the clutch what better way to show faith in a player and reinforce the thinking that he can still do it. 

 

If Taits gets a hit there J-Man looks like a genius but not only didn’t Tatis get a hit he struck out badly bringing out all the John McGraw’ on AM radio and that’s fine let them have their day but when Tatis comes up in a big spot against the Phillies and delivers it will be Tatis and Manuel turn to gloat.

 

After doing as good a job as you can expect yesterday, Nelson Figueroa was DFA and most likely headed to Anaheim and he might be joined by Darren O’Day also DFA but he must be offered back to the Angels for $25K. If both Figueroa and O’ Day end up in SOCAL for nothing in return then Omar Minaya deserves all the criticism he will get.

 

So now Casey Fossum comes up for the sloe reason the he can throw a baseball with his left arm. Anyone see Tim Redding?

“CATCH ME NOW I’M FALLING, I’M IN YOUR HANDS IT’S UP TO YOU, CATCH ME NOW I’M FALLING”

The one bright spot in Daniel Murphy’s error yesterday was it verified my rant to every Little Leaguer I’ve ever coached “CATCH THE BALL WITH TWO HANDS”!!!!!!!

 

Murphy the outfielder is a work in progress and if you just read the headline you’d think Johan Santana was looking to jack up Murphy for costing him and the Mets a win but after you read the quotes, Santana came off showing leadership qualities instead of being a finger pointer:

 

 “It’s one mistake that he made. It cost us the whole ballgame, but its part of the game,” Santana said of Murphy’s gaffe. “I know he’s in a learning process. This is not going to be the first time. I don’t think it’s going to be the last one, either. The only thing is we learn from our mistakes. That’s all I can say. I’m pretty sure he’ll be back and try to do better.”

 

“We cannot afford to make a lot of mistakes,” he continued. “We were out by one game last year. Every game is very important. We have to do the routine plays, and I’m pretty sure (Murphy) was trying his best there and it didn’t work out.”

 

I have no problem with want Santana said as it’s true. Its basic baseball, don’t give the opposition more than 3 outs. When you do, you lose and Murphy’s error was negligence. I still love you Danny Boy but next time “TWO HANDS”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Do you get the feeling that if J-Man could have one wish it would be to have someone other than Gimp Castillo playing 2nd base?

 

How about this, on this day in 1962 the New York Mets had their inaugural home opener at the Polo Grounds losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. The “crowd” that day was 12, 447 which will be the same amount standing in the cue at the Shake Shack concession stand tonight at the Grand Opening of $iti Field.

 

Wouldn’t have been a nice idea to incorporate the first ever home game for the Mets with the first game at the Shea and $iti? You could introduce the starting lineups from each Mets team (or a surviving member of the players family) and how about this, Shea opened on April 17th 1964 also against the Pirates and the Pirates won that one 4-3 as well. If MLB had used their heads and made the Pirates the Mets opponent in this first series then maybe Opening Day at $iti would have been in the day time?

FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT, 3 MORE YEARS OF OLLIE!!!!

No fourth year but the money was sweetened so I guess Scott Boras saved some face but you have to wonder what took so long? How tough a negotiation was this? 3 years/$36 mil is a victory for Omar and the Mets in terms of years and money. So now what? Now that the pitching has been addressed will the need for an outfielder with some pop be added? Can the Mets be happy with a projected 7-8-9 in the lineup of Schneider-Castillo-Pitcher De Jour? Can Gimp handle the two hole anymore so that Ryan Church get take the 7 hole with Schneider moving to 8?  Still more questions than answers with 12 days to go before pitchers and catchers report to St Lonesome Time to stock up on the Pepto Bismal

JUST LIKE GEORGE BUSH, WATCH OUT FOR THE OTHER SHOE

On this the last day of the Bush Presidency, I get to use the last of my former President material thanks to Omar Minaya’ signing of left handed hitting outfielder Cory Sullivan  to a 1yr $600K deal that with incentives could go to $900K.

There has to be more to this signing as now the Mets have Ryan Church, Dan Murphy, Jeremy Reed and Sullivan who play outfield and bat left handed so the presumption is there must be a deal in the works.

My feeling is that Ryan Church will not be the Mets right fielder come April

“ANSWER THE QUESTION MR. MINAYA”

So last night Omar Minaya was a guest on SNY’s Hot Stove show and of course one of the big questions was about Manny Ramirez (is it me or are the Skill Sets the only folks in Metsdom who against Manny as a Met?) but Omar never answered the question in fact all he needed was fruit basket on his head because he did a great Carmen Miranda imitation:

Asked specifically about Manny Ramirez, and whether he has recommended signing him to ownership, Minaya said:

{“Manny Ramirez is a great player… But, the reality is, we have been focused on pitching… If you don’t have the foundation with starting pitching, I just don’t believe you win championships… So, we have to address our starting pitching and our bullpen first… Like anything else, you put your team together, like all GMs, you have a game plan, but the bottom line is you have to focus on pitching.”}

Huh? Omar? Manny? The question was about acquiring Manny Ramirez? Yes we need pitching no doubt but a right handed hitting outfielder should on your shopping list as well. Omar seems to be ready to become a City Councilman.

BRING ON THOSE PHILLY PIGEONS

Different day some ol’ Mets news which means there is nothing to talk about. If not for the Rodriguez signing and the Putz trade this would be the worst off season since I started writing this blog which is going on seven years.

Derek Lowe is still on the ‘Ho Stroll, Petey wants to come back (I love you Petey but no, no ,no- time to move on with the Mets life and yours)  and there is still is a big need for a right handed corner outfielder but today and the next three days I am putting all that to the side as it’s time ot concentrate on football as the New York Football Giants get to defend their Super Bowl Championship with a play off game Sunday against the Philadelphia Pigeons.

Here’s is what we know about the Pigeons, they are Philly’s answer to the Mets as they never fulfill their fans desire with a Championship and know this too about Philadelphians They would trade 20 Phillies World Series Championships for One Pigeons Super Bowl Trophy. Philliy is a Pigeons Town first and foremost (with the Flyers second) but it’s too bad that Philly is running into the One NY team that has balls in the Football Giants.

Key to the game is Brandon Jacobs establishing his ball running prowess and the G-Men D-Line harassing the living shit out D-McMahon to the point he pukes (which he seems to do in big games)

This is a REAL NY-Philly rivalry and this time NY will come out on top
