Mets Fans Shouldn’t Boo Chipper Jones, They Should Boo The Skill Sets Instead

Chipper Jones makes his last appearance as a major league baseball player in NYC this weekend. The Mets, like other teams around the league, will honor Jones as he sails off into retirement. Most of you will boo and kill the organization for honoring a player who was a thorn in the Mets side for the last 19 years. Your anger towards Jones is ill advised, your anger should be towards the Skill Sets for not heading the lesson that Jones was teaching the Mets whenever they were the Braves opponent, that lesson was “you need me to be a Met”.

Think about it, Jones owned the Mets, not just with his lifetime .314/.410/.553 splits against them or the 49 home runs he hit against them either, what Jones tried to show the Mets was, you need to act and think like a winner as to become one. When Jones would come to NY he played the stage better than any Tony award winning actor. We chanted “LAAAAAARRRRRYYYYYY, LAAAAAAARRRRRYYYYYYY” and he ate it up. He loved the fact that Mets fans had a passion, fire, and desire that matched his. For a guy born in the South, he had a New York mentality and I think a want to play here as well.

Why didn’t the Mets ever make a strong move on Jones when he was a free agent?  You would have thought an owner whose team was owned by a superstar player who had that balls to the wall, win at all cost mentality,  would say “hell if I can’t beat him then I want to join him”.

As much as Jones loved the Braves, Atlanta and playing in the South, I have to think is the Mets made an offer above and beyond like they did to land Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, Jones would have had a difficult time turning them down. We know his love for the city and Shea Stadium was so strong he named one of his sons Shea.   Back in 2000, Jones signed a 6 yr/$90mil deal with Atlanta but when that deal was up, he re-signed for 3yrs at $40 mil, this was in the days of the Mets swimming in Madoff bucks so the thought that Freddy Skill Sets couldn’t have raised the stakes for Jones is ridiculous. I don’t remember if there was talk of the Mets making a pitch for Jones back in 2000 or even in 2006, I doubt there was but in hind sight there should have been. It could be that the Skill Sets felt that going after Jones and even signing Jones would have led to fans revolting that a despised opponent would join their beloved Mets.  Well, I guess we see what happens when you give in to the lunatic fringe of your fan base.

This is why, as much as I loathe the Highlanders and old Boss George, he knew players like Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden and David Cone were the kind of players he needed to win championships. You think he cared that they were former Mets? Hell, he signed Wade Boggs to play 3rd base who played for a team and organization he hated with a passion.

Think about Chipper as a Met. Imagine him with a kid like Jordany Vladespin ? Remember he called out Jason Heywood who came up as one of the hottest prospects in baseball for not playing due to fatigue. Jones went right at Heywood and made the Braves right fielder grow up fast.  I can’t say the Mets would have won a World Series championship with Jones on the team but I could guarantee he would have had no problem stepping up and holding his teammates accountable for their play.  I’m also sure he would have gone down as one of the greatest Mets players of all time.

So when Chipper Jones comes up to bat for the first time on Friday night, what Mets fans should do is turn towards the owner’s box at Citi Field and give the Skill Sets a rousing standing boo not just for never pursuing Jones when he was a free agent but for not having the smarts to understand the lesson Chipper was teaching.

NEWS AND VIEWS

As we wait for Sandy Alderson and his Front Office Posse to check  into the Motel 6 Hilton Anatole in Dallas so they can get some much needed work done to reshape the 2012 Mets, let’s look at a few news items from that last few days:

ITEM: JOSE REYES STILL A FREE AGENT

I would love to hear the conversations between Reyes and his agent on their free agency game plan. So far all we’ve heard is a rumor of an imminent deal with the Fish and nothing more, just a lot of speculation, in fact we’ve heard about this deal for about three weeks now.  As I’ve mentioned before, I love how Alderson is playing is hand here, especially how he told the Mets beat writers all he knows about Reyes right now is what he reads in the papers. This guy is good, very good. If by some chance Reyes comes back to the Mets he may end up paying them to play here.

By the way check out this post from Coop on the Reyes free agent saga at Kiner’s Korner a well worthy read.

ITEM: OMAR MINAYA HIRED BY THE SAN DIEGO PADRES TO WORK IN THE FRONT OFFICE

Congrats to Omar as he was named the SR. VP of Baseball Ops for the San Diego Padres. As a GM and the front office face of a franchise, Minaya was miscast, his perfect role is that of scout and amateur talent evaluator. Safe to say Minaya will never be a big league GM again same as Willie Randolph will never be a big league manager again, the jobs were just too big for both of them.

ITEM: DODGERS SIGN CHRIS CAPUANO TO A 2YR/$10 MIL DEAL

And you want to know why the Dodgers are bankrupt? Thank the baseball gods that Nick Colletti is not the Mets GM.

ITEM: PEDRO MARTINEZ ANNOUCES HIS RETIREMENT FROM BASEBALL

No doubt about it, Pedro is a first ballot Hall Of Famer. I’ve never hide my man crush for Pedro and who could forget his first start with the Mets, Opening Day April 4, 2005 in Cincinnati where he gave up 3 runs in the first inning then settled down to K 12 Red Legs before giving way to the bullpen and suckitude closer Braden Looper losing the game. Then a week later at opening day at Shea Stadium, the fans cheering every time Pedro was shown on the Jumbotron or walked on the field, talk about electric. It’s sad his Mets career wasn’t very fruitful but still Pedro was the man.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT METS FANS, THIS COULD WORK OUT IN OUR FAVOR

So the seal has been lifted from the lawsuit brought by the Madoff victim’s trustee against the Skill Sets and everything they own and I’ll tell you the truth, there is so much rhetoric coming from both sides that if a settlement isn’t reached this could drag on for years. My main concern is how does this affect the NY Mets and the operation of the baseball organization from the minor leagues to the big league to the ability of Sandy Alderson to sign players he believes are worthy of a contract. I feel bad for the innocent folks who were duped by this filthy scumbag Madoff but the biggest investment I make is a $5 Mega-Millions Quick Pick so all this financial shit is lost on me.

But I started thinking about the Skill Sets role in this I saw a pattern of fiscal stupidity with Madoff and the money the team has spent on the Mets. For years Freddy Skill Set was called Freddy Coupons for being a tight wad but in reality he was a big spender. The Mets payroll has always been top 3 in all of baseball. The Skill Sets big problem is they never knew how to spend wisely just as they didn’t invest their money (and other people’s money) correctly.  Think about it, the Mets would over spend on free agents like Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran but they’d never go overboard to on a draft pick. They paid top dollar for performances that players achieved with other teams but not on players who could bring the best of their talents to the Mets. Then went cheap.

The Skill Sets are loyal to a fault and that loyalty has cost them personally and professionally. Bernie Madoff made Freddy and Uncle Saul swoon when he quoted profits of their investment to them, you can picture Freddy and Saul with their puppy dog eyes looking at Madoff and telling him “ooooh Bernie you’re so dreamy”, meanwhile he was fucking them out of all their cash. To make matters worse the Skill Sets turned all their friends, investors and employees on to the Magic of Madoff  which in a way makes me feel some sympathy, as they are now looked upon and as bunch of bumbling idiots by some for not knowing what went on or a bunch of lying thieves to others. Either way it’s not good to be a Wilpon or a Katz today. Now if the court case proves the Sill Sets were a bunch of conniving louts, then I’ll be out with the flame thrower to fry their lying ass, but for now I’ll rail about their incompetence.

The Skill Sets have handled the Mets just like their investments, thinking they were doing the right thing and have it come back and bite them in the ass.  With the exception of Frank Cashen and Sandy Alderson (his resume speaks for itself) the hiring of men to run the baseball operations had been awful.  Not just that, but they always had a tough time of firing guys when it was the appropriate time. Steve Philips was banging secretaries like he was a porn star and when one of them took exception to his advances she cried sexual harassment. What did the Skill Sets do? They fired him for about a day and then brought him back. Omar Minaya the last two seasons was not only incompetent but paranoid as we saw in his presser for the Tony Bernazard termination when he attacked Adam Rubin. Minaya should have been fired on the spot but of course he wasn’t. When Sandy Alderson was hired he tried his best to be diplomatic when asked about Minaya and if he had a position in the org, obviously Alderson wants no part of Omar hanging around and you’d think Minaya would have brains enough to take his $1mil and move on but Freddy Skill Sets loves Omar and wants him around in any some capacity maybe as a playmate for Jeffey.  Even when they do fire people they can’t even do that right as we saw with the Willie Randolph fiasco.  Then when you add in all the bad contracts, the awful job of designing and running Citi Field and the inability to keep Jeffey out of the baseball business is it any wonder Bernie Madoff took them for a bunch of saps?

Things are starting to look a bit clearer and as Mets fans we may end up the winners in this whole mess.  Bud Selig being up close and personal with the Skill Sets saw the S.S. Skill Sets was ready to hit an iceberg. With the Hollywood Bums also at rock bottom (who knew the McCourt divorce would look like a case on The People’s Court compared the Skill Sets v. Madoff Trustees?) The Used Car Salesman could not let both his flagship NL teams sink. The Mets were a team that spent more money and received less return than any team in baseball. What Selig saw was an organization that was in dire need for structure, for a leader, a man that could not be challenged and who embraced challenge, Sandy Alderson was the only man who could fix this mess.

The whole interview process for a new GM was a facade; it wasn’t up to the Skill Sets to hire Alderson it was up to Alderson if he wanted the assignment. I’m sure the first thing Alderson told Freddy and Uncle Saul was “The kid’s got to go” meaning Jeffey, and I’m sure without that, Alderson doesn’t take the job. That my fellow Mets fans could be the best thing to happen to the Mets since General Eckert void Tom Seaver’s contract with the Atlanta Braves and in a special draft pull the Mets name out of a hat.

If I could give the Skill Sets a little advice, it’s time to lay low fella’s. You’ve put word out on the street that the team is up for partial sale so sit back in your palatial estate (while you still have them) and work out a plan of your finances. The one good thing you have going on in your life right now is Sandy Alderson is running your baseball team. Leave him and his lieutenants handle the baseball operations   while you huddle with your lawyers. Stay away from going to St. Lonesome. Stay away from opening day. In fact just stay the fuck away from the Mets altogether!!!!!

HEY METS FANS, GROW UP!

There is a segment of Mets fans who I bet are envious of the fans of the Washington Nats today as the D.C. rooters are reveling in the fact that their owner ponied up stupid money for Jayson Werth. Some of you miss those good old days when the Mets tossed around those dead presidents like they were Penny Saver coupons in an apartment building lobby, but I guess you all suffer from temporary amnesia since the last Championship flag to fly over a facility where the Mets work was 25 years ago.  I mean some of you are bitching about the Mets not going balls in on free agent, GET OVER IT those days a done, instead of going over the free agent lists I strongly advise you take a strong interest in the high school and college players eligible for the June entry draft

The Nationals are where the Mets were five years ago when they had to bribe players to wear the Mets uni with more years and more money than anyone else in baseball would. How did it work out? Pedro Martinez spent more time in St Lonesome than Flushing. Carlos Beltran and Scott Boras went to the Highlander with a last minute plea to make an offer as they hemmed and hawed about taking the Mets deal to either match or come close to the Mets offer so Beltran could patrol the green pastures of the South Bronx.  Then of course there are the deals that will live in franchise infamy like OP, Castillo and the Grand Daddy of them all, Bobby Bonilla’s contract of perpetuity and I’m not even counting Johan Santana and K-Rod’s deal that will take up $126 mil combined over the next four seasons and you want to know why after surveying this payroll carnage, Sandy Alderson has decided to stop the madness?

Really get over yourselves Mets fans, stop the bullshit about “oh we’re gonna suck next season” and “I can’t believe they cut Chris Carter, he was a warrior” “There’s no way they can trade Reyes or Beltran and if they do I’ll never root for this team again” WHAAAAA! WHAAAA! WHAAA!  you sound like a bunch of fucking rubes.  THIS ORGANZIATION TRADED THE GREATEST PLAYER IN FRANCHISE HISTORY AND THOSE US WHO WERE AROUND THEN ARE STILL HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew!!! Sorry for screaming but this “whole woe is a Mets fans” shit is making my blood boil.

I have no idea if Sandy Alderson will make this team a contender or if he can build the farm system for players that can useful playing for the Mets or for barter but I’m willing to wait and see if he can. I’m much more excited about 2011 as I was about 2010. I’m not in the gloom and doom mood I was last winter with this organization, shi,t I haven’t said anything nasty about Jeffey Skill  Sets in a month, that’s what you call progress.  Alderson has a track record of success so that’s why I feel the future looks brighter than most of you do.

UH-OH I HEAR DRUMS, IT MUST BE FERNANDO

21 days until pitchers and catchers

It looks like Fernando Tatis is retuning for a third season with the Mets. Please hold your applause until the end, thank you. If you look at the offensive numbers on Tatis’ Baseball-Reference page you might be inclined to say this is a good deal for the Mets.  I’ll go as far as say I’m happier with Tatis coming back just for the fact that it means that Carlos Delgado’ career as a Met is done.  Last night on Twitter I was angry about the Tatis return but by this morning I’m more, “eh, whatever”. I’m tired of ranting about the off season and the mish-mosh ways of the organization, that has both the fan base and media baffled, I guess it’s time we just let it play out, we’ll have all summer to scream and yell.

Look at this from John Smoltz point of view, what was good for Pedro Martinez could be good for him as well. Why sign with a team this early when you can workout on your own, play golf, even do some TV if you like and then wait to see the pitching landscape during the season and make the best deal you can.

As much as I can’t stand the way ownership and the front office fuck up and the on field personnel play like amateurs, there is no way I could ever, ever root against the Mets. I don’t care if a loss meant that the Jeffey, Omar, and J-Man all get the boot, I would never and have never rooted against the Mets. If I didn’t root for the Cincinnati Reds when Tom Seaver was traded and pitched against the Mets, I’m sure as hell not going to root against them now. Root against the Mets? Never in a million fucking years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t understand J-Man saying that Fernando Nieve is the front runner for the 5th spot in the pitching rotation? Not to get to worked up over the 5th spot (when spots 2-4 are not exactly the Rocks of Gibraltar) but where does Jon Niese or Nelly Figs fit with this team? How about Bradley Holt or Dillon Gee? Why is J-Man so against competition? Why am I full of questions?

No matter what happens this season, I’m rooting hard for my boy Daniel Murphy to put up big time numbers. No one on this team works as hard as Murphy and I just hope his hard work pays off and he just hangs in there until Wally Backman gets the job with the big club. Am I a Daniel Murphy fanboy? Yes. He is everything we Mets fans want in a player. Shows up for mini-camp when he’s not required to (Jose? Jose Reyes? Are you here? Come out, come out ,wherever you are!) will be the first guy at St Lonesome waiting for the gates to open for spring training (it will be neck and neck with him and D-Wright) and is working hard to improve at the fourth positions the Mets have assigned him to. How can you as a Mets fan not root for this kid?

No Pro Baseball Central tonight but I will be on the with Kenrick Thomas and his Real Sports Talk Radio Show on Blog Talk Radio tonight at 10PM ET.

There is a group NYRNation that is planning a FIRE GLEN SATHER rally outside of Madison Square Garden on Sunday March 7th  at 5PM before the Rangers-Sabres game. It is getting very ugly at MSG as the Rangers find themselves in the middle of 10 teams look at the 7 and 8 spot in the NHL playoffs. In fact the Rangers are a mirror of the Mets. Underachivers, Bad Management, Clueless Owner!

METS SUFFERING FROM THE TIM REDDING VIRUS. WATCHING HIM PITCH MAKES YOU SICK

Yeah I took the day off yesterday. So I sat in my back yard and took apart a playhouse and a slide that my kids have had since they were babies and I fired up the Webber Kettle and listened to Howie and Wayne and chilled. Maybe it was riding to Manhattan on the 7 train after a game a few weeks ago and listening to Wayne Hagin tell his stories of his days with the Oakland A’s and realizing that Hagin is a really nice guy that he is growing on me as the Mets radio guy. Yes Hagin rides the subway to work just like the rest of us slobs.

The cause of the stomach virus going around the Mets clubhouse has been linked to watching Tim Redding pitch. I have to think Omar is at least pondering the signing of Pedro Martinez to take Redding spot in the rotation. If Redding can’t pitch effectively his next start it’s time to cut bait.

What a May to remember 19-9 with a depleted roster. Just goes to show you if you can pitch, play defense and keep the brain farts to a minimum you will win baseball games.

I can’t figure out J J Putz. Is he physically unfit or is his head a mess? Old School Dan Werthen feels it’s just a mechanical breakdown but Omir Bench thought Putz was anxious on the mound. Between Putz and Sean Green, J-Man may have to put an extension on his Dog House although there is one spot open with Shrek sent off to Chitown.

I think there is better chance of Bruce Berenyi coming back to pitch for the Mets this season than Ollie Perez.

Cliff Floyd has just been activated from the DL by the Padres. I know he’s hurt so much his car has handicap plates but how about brining him back to the Mets and letting spell Sheffield in left and some added leadership?

I don’t know what looked worse the Mets playing in the classic pinstripe uni and ruining it with that disgusting black and blue hat or Susan Boyle in a evening gown?

I don’t know what bad or evil thing Angle Pagan has done in his life but I think he’s paid the price already.

King of the Asshats, Filip Bondy has a piece on Jay Horowitz in today’s Daily News. From what you hear, Horowitz is loved by the Mets players as he protected them from the big bad media but after reading the story I find Horowitz a sad soul.

If 90 % of your paying customers were upset with something with your product, you’d  make a change right away, right? Then why does management continue to play Sweet Caroline when Mets fans HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
