BASEBALL’S CLOSE OUT SALE

Baseball’s garage sale begins tonight A/K/A the non-tendered players go on the free agent market and there are some players on the list that would help the Mets immeasurably like:

RHP Kevin Corriea

The Padres are trying to have the lowest payroll since the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings started paying players so a very good #4 pitcher like Corriea will be sitting out there to the highest bidder. Right now Corriea would be better than anyone other than Johan Santana in the Mets rotation.

Garret Atkins/Ryan Garko

Either player would be an excellent compliment to Daniel Murphy as a right handed hitting tag team partner at first base.

RHP Chien-Ming Wang

Yes he is coming off injury and yes he is a Highlander but Wang is perfect for the Mets if sound as a ground ball pitcher, Wang won’t be ready to pitch until May but Omar has signed bigger question marks than Wang so he’s worth an incentive laden contract. I’ll be surprised if the Highlanders let him go though.

Alex Cora is in mid season form. I guess the Mets will extend his contract now.

THE $ITI NEVER SLEEPS BUT THE TEAM DOES

So where do we begin with the First Night of $iti Field?

The opening was very nice I hear (I Tivo’d the pre game and I’ll watch it tonight as I ran a practice for my Babe Ruth League team last night that I wanted to do an hour and lasted two hours instead ) as The Franchise and Mike Piazza staged a sequel to the closing of Shea with the first pitch at $iti. At least The Franchise stayed for the game as Piazza I guess scared of having to answer any questions about PED’s took a powder after the ceremony. Should have brought Jerry Grote in instead, he never ducked anything.

You know what’s missing from $iti Field? Signage  Not enough advertising signs <eye’s rolling>

Okay yes I get it the food is wonderful at the new ballpark. The team can’t catch and has pitching question marks and clutch hitting is still a foreign substance but the food is really good <both eyes rolling> Maybe the team will perform as good as the Shake Shack or Box Frites some day.

I guess Big Pelf couldn’t build off his last start where he started like shit but finished strong. I wasn’t concerned until I heard J-Man on the post game saying he was concerned about Big Pelf so now I’m concerned and I guess you should be too.

Like a lot of Mets bloggers I was a Heath Bell fan and thought the Mets handled him badly but you know what Heath? Time to shut the fuck up! You too Duaner, especially you Duaner. If you put half the energy into to training that you do in running your mouth you might still be here. Sanchez has questioned why he had to prove himself in spring training as he is clueless that he never stepped up when counted on last year. Enjoy San Diego fellas’ and the dog days of August when you’re in last place.

I know with the novelty of the new stadium (I’m going Saturday and I’m leaving my scorebook home as I know I’ll be spending more time out of my seat than in it) and everyone is milling about but the site of ass-less seats behind home plate can not make the Skill Sets happy.

I love the cat running on the field last night. I didn’t get a good look at the fleet feline until this morning when I picked up the Daily News and I did a double take as the cat looks just like one of our cats (Sandy) I have to frame that back cover.

I hope Omar read the game summary of the Dodgers-Giants game last night.

WILL OP SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE?

If we are to believe Jon Heyman the signing of Oliver Perez back to the Mets is eminent. If Omar goes over anything more than a 4yr/$42mil deal for OP he’s out of his mind. At this point I’d rather take a chance with Ben Sheets with a 2yr/$20 mil deal with incentives than give a big deal to OP, but it does seem like it’s Ollie to the Mets and that makes the rotation look like this:

Santana

Maine

Perez

Pelfrey

Garcia/Redding/Neise/Petey?

Take a look at this post by Dan Graziano’ on his NY Baseball Hack site as he lays out the question marks that make up this starting rotation. The only three that are durable are Santana, OP, and Tim Redding. Maine coming off surgery to remove a cyst on his shoulder tends to get fatigued and Big Pelf is still a blooming pitcher that for some reason, even though he is a big strapping young fellow Mets followers treat him like Grandmas Wedgworth china. I listed the Chief first in the 5th starters spot because I’m a big Freddy Garcia fan and I’ll be rooting my ass off for him this spring to make the big club. Redding could be the missing Darren Oliver link that hasn’t been discussed as much as it should have been and John Neise will be on the Buffalo/Flushing shuttle. That leaves Petey and there is a remote possibility that the Mets bring him back.

Am I a little more optimistic than I was on Thursday night about the Mets chances? Maybe a little but those Marlins are still dancing in my head as the team that will give the Mets and Phillies fits all season.

As someone who is left handed, I always say you can never be to thin, to rich or to lefty and it seems Omar Minaya feel the same way  as he has signed Rob Mackowiak to a minor league deal. I love this signing by the Mets as Mackowiak is the definition of a super-sub as he plays just about every position on the field except pitcher. Think Super Joe McEwing but with talent.
