Hey NY Mets, Someone Has To Care!

In the name of the Kranepool, The Seaver and the Holy Gil Hodges. Gil, this team, this organiztion is killing me. I’m so tired of not just the losing but the way this team has no fight in it. Remember when you came the manage the Mets in 1968 and you told your players the days of the loveable losers was over and that if you weren’t ready to dedicate yourself to being a winner then you couldn’t be a part of your team? What happened to that thinking Gil? It came back in the 80’s with Frank Cashen and Davey Johnson then it vanished again and made a bit of an appereance in the mid 2000’s. But Gil, we are back to the ways of old, players have given up, the manager once a bit of a spitfire has a beaten look to him, he has no answers and if he hasn’t lost his clubhouse he’s on the brink. My God Gil, how does this happen and why does it always happen to the Mets ? Please Gil you have to help us, send a message, you are still loved and revered by Mets fans that’s why I turn to you in our time of despair. In the name of the Kranepool, the Seaver and the Holy Gil Hodges Amen.

Out on the street

Where I grew up

First thing they teach us

not to give a fuck

That kind of thinking can’t get you nowhere

Someone has to care.

-The Roots “How I got Over”

Leave it to the Mets to ruin a wonderful MLB debut by Collin McHugh and let Mike Francesa give them a thorough and well deserved ass reaming on his radio show after the game, although Francesa shitting on McHugh’s performance was uncalled for but everything else in his rant and rave was well deserved.

I’m at a loss for words with this latest collapse and I even more dazed and confused over Terry Collins proclamation that Daniel Murphy is “out of gas” and needs a couple of days off.  I’m stunned Colins would use the words “out of gas” and “fatigued” knowing that the fan base are like sharks off the coast of Cape Cod and are circling as they smell blood in the water. What did Collins and the Mets think the fan reaction to Murphy being out of gas would be, sure sit out a few games and rest up? Shit, not in this lifetime.

Am I pissed off about this??? You bet your dragging ass I am. I’m like everyone else, I drag my ass out of bed every morning to go to work and hope that (a) the assholes I work with won’t piss me off to the point I want to stab someone and (b) that there is some overtime to grab so I can provide a little more for my wife and kids. You want fatigue; try getting up at 5AM take a train, a boat and another train to get to work. Then work a twelve hour shift and repeat that commute to go home. Am I complaining?  Hell no! I will never complain about going to work and how I get there, you know why? Because my family depends on me, it keeps me motivated.

So when a baseball player, a baseball player I like very much, is sitting out games because he’s out of gas don’t expect me to accept that as an excuse.

As I said when I stated this rant and rave, I wish I know who went to who with this but either way it seems Terry Collins is getting to that “don’t give a fuck” stage with this team and that is very, very sad like the Roots song says in “How I Got Over” that type of thinking can’t get you nowhere, someone has to care and has to care right now.

WAYNE HAGIN OUT, JOSH LEWIN IN ?

Metsblog has a link from Neil Best of Newsday stating that former Texas Rangers and current San Diego Chargers radio play by play man Josh Lewin, is the favorite to replace Wayne Hagin in Mets radio booth.

Hagin just never clicked with Mets fans, myself amongst them, as he had that generic radio announcers voice and always seemed to be a second or two behind the action on the field. The Hagin/ Howie Rose partnership just never seemed like it meshed with Howie being “one of us” and Hagin not having a Mets or NYC connection.

Lewin is a curious choice as it seems he left the Rangers due to his other commitments of doing baseball on FOX Saturday Baseball and his gig with the Chargers. Lewin enjoys tossing out a lot pop culture quotes during broadcasts to the point it becomes forced and a distraction. Being that Lewin was born in Rochester NY and grew up in the Boston area, he has knowledge of what the East Coast/NY fan is looking for in a sports broadcast so this could be a very interesting hire by the Mets.

With Lewin having Sports talk radio show experience as well maybe he could add working Mets Extra and taking phone calls or who knows him and Howie could take phone calls during games.

TODAY IS BASEBALL BLOGGERS ALLIANCE DAY

Today is Baseball Bloggers Alliance (BBA) Day, and as a member from the beginning of the Alliance and the NY NL Chapter President, I’d like to tell you about the BBA.

The BBA was founded in 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw, who blogs about the St. Louis Cardinals at his C70 at the Bat site. Daniel had e-mailed me about the BBA and asked if would like to join up and I immediately said yes. What I liked about the BBA was it was a place for someone like me who is passionate about my team to meet up with other passionate baseball fans who are also bloggers.  My membership in the BBA has been a tremendous help in doing my THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN radio show and in hosting the BASEBALL BLOGGERS ALLIANCE BASEBALL TALK SHOW on Blog Talk Radio, as I can always find a blogger to come on and talk about their team when they are facing the NY Mets, to give me a fans/bloggers eye view of ups and downs of their team, which helps myself and my listeners get a better idea of the opponent facing the Mets in that series.

Besides the BBA Talk Radio show, we also vote on season ending awards in the same fashion as the Baseball Writers of America, in fact they seem a bit worried about our views as they issued a cease and desist letter for the BBA not use the terms they use for their award. We wear that C & D as a badge of accomplishment.

The BBA is 230 members strong, with chapters which are history oriented, cover fantasy baseball, the analytical part of baseball and those who cover general baseball news and views. The majority of the membership though is of team specific sites and I am very proud to say that the New York Mets have the highest number of bloggers in the BBA at 19.

So I’d like for you to take a little time today and visit our BBA site and also check out our broadcasts on Blog Talk Radio.

EVERYBODY WAS KUNG FU FIGHTING, THOSE CATS WERE FAST AS LIGHTING

Excellent post by Mathew Cerrone of MetsBlog on how the Mets need Sandy Alderson even though Rick Hahn would be a fantastic hire as well. If the Mets were an expansion team or a team in a small market then Hahn would be the pick, put for the Mets who need to change the way they are perceived by other teams, the media and especially their own fans (a/k/a paying customers) then Sandy Alderson is the clear choice for GM.

On Tuesday’s THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN Radio Show, I spoke with Julian Levine of Splashing Pumpkins about the Giants-Phillies NLCS and how I wanted Bochy to put the Kung Fu Panda back in the lineup. He did and the Panda delivered. The Giants are one game away from the World Series. Part of me is hoping the Highlanders make a miraculous comeback and play the Giants in the World Series. If they do I’d make the trip to the South Bronx to root for the Gigantics while wearing my Johnny Antonelli throw back jersey.

By the way, I give props to Ol’ Cholly for going with Roy Oswalt in 9th as he was the best pitcher available in the pen at that time. He was only going to use him for an inning any way and it still left Brad Lidge to close out the game. Where I do take some issue with Manuel is they way he used Jose Contreas for just one batter but hey I’m not complaining about the outcome that’s for sure.

The only part of the Rangers that worries me that they could suffer a Highlander collapse is their bullpen which is quite shaky.

I’ll just say I’m really looking forward to tonight’s Game 5 NLCS match up between The Freak and Doc Halliday and that’s all I’ll say. I feel like I jinxed yesterdays Game 5 of the ALCS so I’ll lay low with the wise ass remarks for now.
