NY Mets Guilty of Erroneous Assault

Nothing angers me more than errors. I HATE ERRORS! When you give the opposition 4,5, 6 outs in an inning you’re just putting the game on a platter for your opponent and saying “here, help yourself to a victory”. Nothing demoralizes a team more than errors. Pitchers lose faith in their fielders, the acid in the managers stomach boils and the players on the bench start to question “why is he out there and I’m sitting here”? The Mets are the worst fielding team in baseball and it’s a testament to the players and to Terry Collins that between that bad defense and shoddy relief pitching, that this team hangs in as it does and is still four games over .500 but if last night starts a trend that mood will change quickly.  The Mets need to give the Cubs an ass whippin’ tonight.

Jason Bay is ready to begin baseball activity, he’ll ride the stationary bike today if he survives that without a setback he should be able to go down to St. Lonesome and begin hitting and fielding. Last time Bay was on a rehab assignment, Terry Collins felt he came back to quickly as his bat was slower than usual, which for what we’ve seen so far in his Mets career means it moved at glacial speed, so I’d think his time in St. Lonesome will be weeks instead of days.

So what happens when Bay comes back? Well as we seen that past couple of weeks, a little bit of Scott Hairston is fine, a lot of Scott Hairston well, you get to see the imperfections that have makes him more valuable as a bench player than a starter.  Bay gets his left field job back but it still leaves the team woefully short of a right handed bat that has some potency. The guy I’d love to get to fill that right handed hitting void is Cody Ross, Ross would make a huge difference in the Mets line up with his power and the guy has a World Series ring so you’re adding a guy who has won which is huge in my book.

I don’t know if the Red Sox would deal Ross off but it seems with the trade of Kevin Youkilis to the White Sox, the Old Town Team is ready to rebuild so if Ross is available Sandy Alderson should jump on a chance to add him to the Mets. Here’s how much I want Ross on the Mets, I’d offer Daniel Murphy as part of the deal.

I hope Justin Hampson becomes the reliever the Mets need to hold late inning leads but I wish he was wearing a different number. You cannot give a journeyman pitcher 45 com’on Kevin Kierst find Hampson a number in the fifty-somethings will ya!

THE SANDY ALDERSON CONFERENCE CALL

Just finished up the conference call with Sandy Alderson and here are a few observations:

From a bloggers stand point Alderson treated us with a lot of respect and said he will try to meet with us in this forum as often as he can, which is smart as he is bringing his message to the fans and not to some wind bag on talk radio or MSM-types with hidden agendas.

I asked him about the urgency of putting together the starting pitching staff and Alderson agreed that it is a top priority. The FO is not looking at guys who will pitch for low salary but he is looking at low risk/high reward types. More to the fact, he is looking at doctors reports on pitchers (obviously Chris Young and Jeff Francis) He will not sit back and wait to see who falls in his lap and by the end of the month he hopes to have acquired some arms for the rotation.

Alderson understands the frustration and the passion of the fan base and he enjoys the feedback from the Mets fans. He seems to be tired of all the Moneyball questions and said if ownership wanted him to run team as a small market club he would not have taken the job. He is well aware that this is the major of major markets which reads to me that Alderson will run the Mets similar to how the Red Sox are run.

The best part of the conference call was when Alderson addressed the minor league system and how he wants it run. He hit on every issue I have screamed about here for years. The minor league managers and coaches will hold to strict set of guidelines on how to play the game, this way as the minor leaguers move up the ladder, there are no surprises. Everything you worked on and learned in Rookie Ball will be implemented in A, AA and AAA. Alderson then said that everyone players, coaches, mangers, instructors etc. will be given field manuals on how the Mets Way will be followed. Excuse me I think I need a moment (Deeeeeeeeep Breeeeeeeeeeeath) I’m sorry, I’m just so happy!!!!!!

The naming of the coaching staff is being held up due to administrative paper work but it seems all the names we’ve heard, Obie as bench coach, Mookie at 1st base, Chip Hale at 3rd, Warthen PC, Dave Hudgens hitting coach and Jon Debus as bullpen coach. Official announcement will be made Monday or Tuesday.

For a more in depth view of the call check out Mets Blog.

THANKS FOR NOTHING TWINKIES

You know what? I’m glad Terry Ryan said he wasn’t interested in interviewing for the Mets GM job, I’d want nothing to do with anyone from the Minnesota Twins organization.  It’s one thing to lose a series to the Bronx Bastards but the Twinkies laid down like dogs. No fight whatsoever.

If your a Twins fan and what I’m saying here pisses you off and you say that my Mets suck , so who am I to call out a team for failure, remember this, the Mets at least split their six game this season with the Highlanders and there are only two teams the Pinstriped Pricks  fear the Mets and the Red Sox.

Oh so Phil Hughes is now a great pitcher after last night’s performance. As I said in the comments section to our resident Highlander contributor, Michael all Highlander fans were shitting themselves silly over their starting rotation and now after playing a team that gave up, they think they have three Cy Young candidates. They’ve all but forgotten their bastard child AJ Burnett, who will have to pitch in the ALCS  and kicked to the curb Javier Lopez, who is awaiting deportation to the National League.

Oh yeah I got my Highlander Hate on in full glory!!!!!

TONIGHT AT 10PM ET THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN ON BLOGTALK RADIO

Go to hit the road this morning for work as I have a training class to attended so I just want to send out a reminder that tonight at 10PM ET I’ll be hosting THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN on BLOG TALK RADIO.

My guests will be Dave Payne and Aviv Blasbalg of Sox vs. Pinstripes. Dave is the Red Sox fan/writer and Aviv the Highlander fan/writer. We’ll look at the season so far for both teams and the race in the AL East and look ahead to the weekend series at Fenway Park between the two teams.

As always, if you can’t join us live you can listen later from our show page on BLOG TALK RADIO or right here at Kranepool Society (click on the widget on the lower left side bar)

Quick hits:

That was one tough game to watch last night between no one in the ball park (announced attendance was 14,350. They must have counted 350 in the seats and 14,000 driving by the ball park), Ollie with his walks and the offense stagnant, by 9PM I bailed not just because the game was dragging but it was time for 24. Just for one day, I want to be like Jack Bauer, I mean what could be better than to grab someone you can’t stand by the neck and say “Do you know who I am” and have them shit themselves.

Big Pelf went for an MRI because he felt tightness in his shoulder.   The MRI came out fine and Pelf said nothing to worry about. I guess when he books a flight to Birmingham, then I’ll panic.

First it was booing Santa Claus, then it was cheering as Michael Irvin was laid out unconscious on the field, then it was a jail at the Vet, then it was fans vomiting on children and now cops using stun guns on fans. Welcome to Philadelphia America’s Most Uncivilized City.

THEO EPSTEIN’S DREAM TEAM PLAYS IN FLUSHING

I wonder if Theo Epstein in the privacy of his domicile, switches his Extra Innings package over to SNY to root for the Mets ? The Mets right now are playing the way Epstein had hoped his Red Sox would when he ran all his statistical analysis that told him pitching and defense is the way to go. Right now the Mets are fueled on that formula.

When you compare the Mets up the middle versus the Red Sox up the middle the only position the Mets lose out on is second base. Even with a healthy Mike Cameron would you take him over Angel Pagan? Forget a healthy Beltran (I won’t link to the Munchkin’s story but he thinks that the Beltran contract is bad for the Mets, this from a guy who has been mailing it in for the past ten years, who stopped attending the events he writes about, and treats his colleagues like shit. If anything Mike Lupica has been stealing from Mort Zuckerman for years ) and the catchers spot, Theo would be beaming if he had the tandem of Barajas/Blanco behind the plate.

With all the fun and frolic over the last week or so of Mets baseball, when was the last time we saw a Braves team this bad? Maybe back when Ted Turner started they games on TBS at 7:35PM ? I have never seen a Bobby Cox team play so badly, I ain’t complaining, just a bit taken back.

I agree with Christopher Guy of Mets Minor League Blog, it’s time to bring up Dillon Gee and let him start over John Maine.  Not only is Maine hurting physically but these interviews with him are painful to watch, the guy is a mess physically and emotionally . Put him on the 15 day DL and send him to St Lonesome to get his game and head in order and as for the spot on the 40 man roster for Gee, I think it safe to say the Mets can put Kelvin Escobar on the 60 day DL to free up a spot.

I am really starting to worry about David Wright. Forget the home runs he’s not hitting doubles either and the one thing he was doing, getting on base via walks, has dried up as well.  Maybe it time to move him to the 2 hole with Castillo leading off (if the Reyes in the 3rd spot continues) some kind of shake up with Wright is needed as a lot of Mets fan are starting to feel he’s not the go to guy on this team anymore.

Mets management should do everyone a favor and call tonight’s game now. Not only is raining but it’s cold and the forecast for tonight is for rain and 50 degrees. Folks have to go to work and school tomorrow and if it was a comfortable night you wouldn’t mind but to be cold and wet, I don’t think so. So if you do play the game tonight, be prepared for the national audience to see 25,000 or so empty seats at $iti Field.

“THUMP” THAT WAS THE OTHER SHOE DROPPING ON THE JOSE REYES SAGA

I’m sure you all heard by now that Jose Reyes will start the season on the DL and could be out till the middle of May. The thyroid condition that he claims the doctor told he didn’t have will have him sideline from any physical activity for awhile as doctors check his thyroid gland and blood for the next few weeks.

This not a woe- is- us post or a bash Omar and management post as we will have all summer for those, no this one is let’s get on the phone and find a shortstop post because even when (if ?) Reyes comes back, the days of him playing 150+games look to be over.

So who is out there for the Mets ? First off, forget about getting a replacement for Reyes, the Mets are going out and getting anyone close to what Reyes brings to the table, so the player you need to go after has to be a defense first shortstop and the first name that pops into my head is Paul Janish of the Reds. Janish is a terrific defender and makes just $435K which fits into the Skill Sets budget. Jed Lowrie of the Red Sox could be had for a song (and maybe a dance) too bad Wilson Valdez has let go to Cleveland as he had a slick glove as well.

Who I don’t want to see is Alex Cora or Anderson Hernandez. No knock on Cora, once or twice a week is ok for him to play but he is no longer an everyday player and Hernandez shouldn’t even be in camp as he’s as done as a Christmas ham.

It looks though as if the Mets will go with Ruben Tejada and I guess Cora twice a week. But I would still try to find a guy like Janish or Lowrie to spell Reyes this year once a week at least. It’s not like I’m nailing Cora to the bench, he can play some second base when the Tree Stump needs a day off.

25 days until opening day YIPPEE-EYE-O-KI-A  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOOD TIDINGS TO YOU NO, NOT YOU JEFF

I’m running out the door to spread some Christmas cheer but before I do, a moment please:

What does your Dickey do? Mine throws a knuckleball

Hello? Where have you been hearing that the Mets should get David DeJesus and Gil Meche? Hello? Is this thing on?

Fork please! Carlos Delgado is as done as a Christmas goose.

When it comes to Assclowns nobody beats Highlander fans. Some of these geniuses have been calling WFAN or Twittering that they hate the deal that brought Javier Vasquez to the Highlanders for Melkey Cabrea and a couple of bush leaguers. Sometimes Highlander fans your stupidity is breath taking.

Thank you Mike Vaccaro, thank you for a wonderful column this morning.

Why do I get the sad feeling that we will see more Red Sox stories in the fish wraps this summer than Mets news?

IF THE SKILL SETS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT CONTENDING IN 2010, THEN THIS MAN NEEDS TO BE SIGNED

Dave Duncan is pissed off at the Cardinals and the St. Louis media for the treatment of his son Chris who was sent to the Red Sox for nothing. Duncan is in the last year of his contract (as is the Stinkin’ Genius Tony LaRussa) and is talking like he wants to go elsewhere. And what a better place to go but Flushing NY.

So if the Skill Sets want to prove they mean business then make Dave Duncan the number one targeted free agent this winter.

How much is it worth to the Mets to have Duncan work with Big Pelf and Bobby Parnell? Or how about Ollie Perez? If Duncan can get anything positive out of OP he gets a street named after him in Queens
