J-Man was on the air with the Big Bloviator on WFAN and Manuel claims he has no dog house and that he and Ryan Church have no problems whatsoever in fact Church is the only player that gets J-Man as his private batting practice pitcher. I believe that like I believe Drew Petersen’ wives are all at the mall shopping.

Also in the interview J-Man said he is very tough on Carlos Beltran in fact he claimed he is tougher on Beltran than any other player. Manuel took up the defense for Jose Reyes as the Bloviator called Reyes lazy. This from a guy who has to count to three to get up out of a chair.

Manuel went on to say that the team is now David Wrights team with Delgado on the shelve.

and the news of the day was the Daniel Murphy as a LF’er is no more. He will now play first base and get a chance to prove he should not be in Manuel’ non-existent Chateau de Bow Wow

Sorry for the late posting today especially after one of the most biziare loss the Mets had suffered in awhile.

Someday the main streamers in the press and talk radio will give fans the credit they are due for knowing their team better than they ever could. Why is everyone in the media so shocked that Jerry Manuel has no use for Ryan Church? We knew this since late February when J-Man made it known that Church would platoon with Fernando Tatis in RF. Back then Daniel Murphy was the fair haired boy but now he is closing in on Church status.

Just viewing the video of J-Man giving Church his ass to kiss after Church missed 3^rd base. I have no doubt that Church missed that base in fact Church deserves to grab some pine after that but Manuel HAS TO go out and argue that call no matter what. Let’s face facts, Manuel is no Earl Weaver when it comes to moves and counter moves from the bench his strength is holding his clubhouse together but after last night there could be a crack in that clubhouse. Manuel not going out to argue was reminiscent of Willie Randolph not fighting for the home run taken away from Carlos Delgado in Highlander Stadium last year.

Carlos Beltran is 100 % right that Angel Pagan (the new Jerry Manuel flavor of the month) should have backed off when he called for that ball. The center fielder is the ruler of the outfield roost, but throwing Pagan under the bus in the press is not what a leader does. Flame his ass in private Carlos.

With D-Wright stepping up big time with his bat (after taking Omar’s “this team has no edge” remark personally) now with Delgado on the shelf for 2 months minimum Wright needs to grab that clubhouse but the balls and get his teams attention. After that embarrassing loss last night maybe a gathering of teammates only is in order before tonight s game.

Lost in the slop of last night was the stellar effort by Tim Redding and the bullpen’s strong outing as well.

Can we please just put Daniel Murphy at 1^st base everyday and see what he can do? Go with Tatis in RF if you want and Sheffield in LF. I don’t know what the hell Murphy sis to J-Man but it’s time to forgive and forget if you’re J-Man. I swear Manuel is part Irish the way he holds a grudge.

When the manager is more upset about losing Alex Cora than Reyes then we know we’re in for a turbulent summer .

What was up with Big Pelf last night? Was he channeling his inner Doc Ellis? Did he spend part of the day in Height-Ashbury? Or is he trying to be the new Bill Lee, a/k/a The Space Man? Long strange trip for Big Pelf.  IF it weren’t for the brain farts leading to 3 balks, Pelf would have had a stellar afternoon in Frisco. The best part of his performance was the 10 ground ball outs he got so I’d say it was still a positive outing for Pelfry.

 

What you’re shocked that Steve Phillips sounded like a total douchebag last night during the ESPN telecast? Whoever came up with the idea to add Smarmy Steve to the booth needs to be fired. Still smarting over getting canned by the Mets eh Stevie boy ? Well you sucked as a GM and you suck as a TV analyst in fact all you’re any good at is banging secretaries. When Joe Morgan becomes the voice of reason in the ESPN booth then the apocalypses is near. Jon Miller should be arrested for the fucking shirt and tie he wore last night. That outfit was gayer than a weekend on Fire Island.

 

Tip of the Mets cap to Dave Singer at NY Sportsdog for calling out J- Man for pinch hitting for Daniel Murphy. As I posted on Dave’s site, whatever crime Ryan Church committed to get in the J-Man doghouse, Daniel Murphy must have been an accomplice as he is not getting the Chateau de Bow Wow treatment. With Delgado gone (I think he’s gone for good) can we just let Murphy play first base? Either that or offer the Orioles Jeremy Reed and Eddie Kunz for Aubry Huff.

 

My evening started out great as I was a guest on The Seven Train To Shea radio show and had a great time with those guys. But after that the night sucked as my Boston Celtics had the rigors of old legs, lack of size and lack of depth catch up with them to lose to the Magic (enjoy it now Orlando as you guys will be gone in 4 to the Cleveland Le Brons) and then the Mets loss coupled with the embarrassing announcing crew on ESPN topped off the evening.

Omar Minaya’s Best Week Ever came to an abrupt end last night as his team ended it’s winning streak, his Ace pitcher again received no run support and this time the defense betrayed him as well, the best free agent pitcher on the market last winter who camethisclose to being the second banana to Santana that the Omar will be looking for before July came to $iti and showed the Mets what could have been, his rejuvenated first baseman is headed for a DL stint and his manager made some head scratching moves before and during the game last night.

 

Big thank you to Dave Singer at NY Sportsdog and James K at Amazin Avenue for doing the heavy lifting on dissecting J-Man’s brain farts last night. Let’s hope he learns a lesson from last night.

 

Carlos Delgado’ tragically hurting hip could send him to the DL. He already had cortisone shot this spring in the hip and is a little leery of taking another one so soon because as we all know cortisone is a steroid. That’s why I don’t get all in a huff over players using PED’s  as cortisone injections are given out to athletes like flu shots at a nursing home.

 

It’s no secret that J- Man doesn’t think Ryan Church is Gangsta’ enough for him but the truth is Jeremy Reed is the same player as Church but with better and more versatile outfield play. Even more bad news for Church is if Delgado goes on the 15 day DL you could see Murphy and Tatis spilt the first base duties with Reed going to RF and Gary Sheffield going to left and Church going to sunflower seed distributor.

Jon Niese stepped up big last night putting forth an effort that could force the Mets to keep reusing Ollie Perez MRI showing his tendonitis over and over again (would anyone object to seeing OP on the 60 day DL? I didn’t think so) Niese had great velocity and command of his fastball and his curve his is out and out nasty.  In fact he went with his fastball early in the game then mixed his break ball and off speed pitches in a nice blend later in the game as his 95 pitches were spilt in an outstanding 67/28 K/B. The other impressive part of Niese game last night besides zero walks was his mound demeanor which was calm, cool and collected. I know this start was against the Pirates not exactly a NL powerhouse but it was still had to be a big confidence boost to Niese.

 

Forget Gary Sheffield, Ryan Church better not turn his back to the north of the state as the F-Mart buzz is getting louder.

Still no sign of Brain Stokes. I’m starting to wonder is there really a Brian Stokes or is he a figment of my imagination?

Com’on  Koos you got to pay the IRS man, Hopefully Koosman won’t be in jail when the 69 celebration takes place.

I want to like Ed Coleman I really do. I’ve met him and he is a great guy but he gives you NOTHING during his Mets reports on WFAN. This morning he was on with Richard Neer and Neer asked about rumors that JJ Putz has had some arm trouble and all Coleman could say was “I don’t know about that” How can you be around the team everyday and not know if Putz and the Mets are hiding something here. Com’on Ed put a little effort in the job will ya.

J-Man is hit with a one game suspension for bumping inept umpire Bill Welke. If Manuel gets a game off, Welke should get at least a 5 game seat for that embarassing wrong call of interference. Sandy Alomar Sr. runs the Mets today

Happy Easter to all even though the weather in NYC feels more like Christmas. Tomorrow morning should be the last of the 30 degree temps in the morning so says Megan Glaros the weather honey on Ch 2. I think she said that but I’m not quite sure because every time I watch her give the weather reports I fall into a daze and just picture her telling me the forecast naked. Is Glaros hot? Muy caliente muchachos, muy caliente

Livan Hernandez may be just and innings eating back of the rotation pitcher but last night he was an artist. Hernandez proved everything that is the art of pitching. It doesn’t matter how hard you throw, if you have command of your pitches that you can hit whatever spot you want, then you’re a Master.

Jerry Manuel, Ryan Church has accepted your challenge

Two things went against Marlon Anderson, he hit left-handed and he wasn’t a pitcher so the Mets had to let him go. He shouldn’t have been with the team anyway as signing him to a two year deal was another Omar folly but Anderson did leave an impression on D-Wright and it seems he was more valuable to the team than most fans (me) felt:

 

“He was probably one of the most unselfish players that I’ve ever played with,”  

said. “He was always looking out for what he thought was the best thing for the team.”

The 6^th and 7^th innings last night summed up the Mets early and I mean realllllllllll early problem of not busting a game wide open. When the opportunity comes up to administer an ass kicking, championship teams kick ass, pretenders come up short.

Top of the 6^th the Mets catch a break as they couldn’t get a sniff of a rally off Anibal Sanchez but Freddi Gonzalez went to his pen and brought in Dan Meyer who promptly gave up a lead off homer to Carlos Beltran to get the Mets on the board. Ryan Church comes up next and singles and this is where you say “here comes the big inning”. Schneider sac bunts Church to 2^nd, a good play because odds are Schneider hits in to a DP in that spot, Gimp Castillo comes up with a man in scoring position and files out. With Castillo getting lifted for a pinch hitter (Jeremy Reed) in 9^th tells you the leash on Gimp is getting shorter and shorter. With 2 outs man on 2^nd Gary Sheffield bats for John Maine who was great last night but Dan Meyer wants no part of Sheffield and throws three pitches out of the strike zone and then Gonzalez orders Meyer to walk him. Respect thy names is an intentional walk. Up steps Jose Reyes and an awful at bat.

Meyer was shook up by the sight of Sheffield and couldn’t throw a strike. The first pitch to Reyes was ball 1. On the next pitch Meyers tries to hit the corner low and away put the pitch was out of the strike zone but of course that doesn’t stop Jose from reaching over and popping it up to RF for an easy fly ball out. Ever hear of take a strike Jose?

On to the Mets 7^th where Daniel Murphy leads off with a base hit (of course!) In comes non-roster invitee Kiko Calero (this looks to be the Marlins downfall, the bullpen that and not being able to play the Mets for 162 games) who walks D-Wright and hits Carlos Delgado with a pitch and the bags are drunk with Carlos Beltran up. Smells like a big inning right ?(“here we are now, entertain us”) uhhh NO!. Beltran drives in a run (a cheap Rib Eye Steak though) hitting into an FC but then Church walks and the bags are juiced once again as Fernando Taits bats for Schieder (J-Man ain’t fooling around, if you can’t hit you will sit) and misses a Grannie bythismuch and that would have broken this one up big. Wright scores and it’s 3-3 and if you want to take a positive out of the inning it’s that the Mets scored some runs late.

Gimp Castillo came up with 2 out worked the count 3-2 and let strike 3 sail over the plate. The clock is ticking fast on Gimp.

I’m still trying to figure how the Gary Sheffield signing is this catastrophic moment in Mets history? Sheffield is not coming in here and bogarting a spot in the line up he has to earn it and the one guy who is impacted by Sheffield being here is Ryan Church  not Dan Murphy (we covered this already I know)  No one shakes their head at the Mets moves more than me but I can’t even fathom Omar Minaya promising anything to Sheffield other than an opportunity to show he can still play. If he can’t then he’s gone, it’s that simple.

 

A major tip of the Mets Cap to The Mets Police, for this link to this story on Jerry Koosman and how the Mets started the five man pitching rotation under Rube Walker. The wildest thing about seeing this story about Koos was I was thinking of Koosman last night last night I was watching MLBN and there were previewing the SF Giants and how the Giants are one of the team in baseball that does not forget it’s former players or it’s franchises history. They put up a graphic that showed Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda and Felipe Alou as former Giants who still work for the organization and who are around the current Giants all through spring training and at times during the season. This has been one of my major gripes with Mets management. Even though it’s nice that Sandy Koufax comes to St. Lonesome every spring to talk to the pitchers it would be even better if Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman were there as spring instructors. Same thing with guys like Jerry Grote, Rusty Stub, and Felix Milan. Management is starting to embrace the old Mets some by of course having them in the TV booth (why isn’t there an analyst in the radio booth? Let Howie do the play by play and have John Franco do color commentary? I’m sorry Wayne Hagin does nothing for me. Besides he talks funny) My hope for opening day at $ti Field is that the pre game festivities would include as many former Mets the team could find and have them walk on to the field from the outfield gates and greet the current team.

 

As far as prediction for the season go let me do it this way:

 

The NL East will be a four team race to start with the Nats looking up at the pack but they will be pains in the ass’s all season. I’m as concerned with the Braves as I am with the Phillies in fact I hope the Phucking Phillis keep up this “look at us we’re beautiful” bullshit celebration of winning the World Series going. Better put the party hats away assholes.

 

The NL Central is the Cubs, Cards, Brewers and maybe the Reds. The Astros and Pirates are there to get fat on.

 

The consensus in the NL West is that the Dodger and D’Backs will fight it out but DO NOT OVERLOOK THE SF GIANTS. Every year I try to find a team I like to follow as I feel they’re taken for granted and the Giants are that team for me this year

 

What makes the AL East so much fun is the Highlanders could win 90 games and not make the post season and yes that’s what I’m rooting for. I still can’t understand why the Tampa Rays get no respect THEY’RE NOT GOING AWAY FOLKS!!!!!! Add in the Old Town Team and this is the best division in baseball. Sorry Jays and O’s fans

 

The AL Central is the most competitive division in baseball and any one of the teams here can win the division title, yes even the Royals and Tigers.

 

The weakest division in the game is the AL West only the Mariners are on the outside looking in as far as a division crown goes.

I’m amazed how much some folks have their balls in an uproar over Gary Sheffield joining the team. Some are worried about team chemistry, how did that chemistry hold up the last two seasons? This team needs a bad ass even if it’s an over the hill one. The chemistry issued should be moot now that it’s known Sheff signed here because the “face of the franchise”, D-Wright called him and said that the Mets were the team for him.

What are you all afraid of? If Sheffield falls on his face he’ll be gone by the All Star break, if he produces, guess what? Your favorite team just might win the NL East

For all of you concerned with the psyche of Ryan Church think about this. Maybe Church needs a kick in the ass to get motivated. No, I’m not drunk, think about it. In spring training J-Man said the Dan Murphy was a better hitter and that Fernando Tatis would be Church’s partner in RF an now they bring in Sheffield as a way to put a carrot in front of Church to produce. I guess we won’t read about this from the scribes who have access to the team on a daily basis as they are too busy stuffing their faces at the Shake Shack concession at $iti.

Which brings me to Ollie Perez and it’s good thing it was cold and shity and $iti since most fans were busy trying eat their way from left field to right. You know what the season didn‘t start yet but I’m already fed up with how good he food is at $iti Field if it’s a choice of great food or a championship baseball team, I’ll eat a fucking bowl of Alpo okay!

Perez had no feel for the ball today he claimed as he not only lacked command but a clue as well but then again that’s Ollie Being Ollie.

 I have banged my head against the laptop trying to figure out why in the name of George Weiss, Omar Minaya would sign Gary Sheffield. When I first saw this story and said in my best John McEnroe voice “You cannot be serious”? I thought the Mets were done with signing old guys who were finished. But then you say he’s right handed and he’s cheap but then again he has the rep of being a malcontent but it seems he wants to play for the Mets but still is that enough for Omar to bring Sheffield on board?

I want to scream HELL NO!!!! but I’ll tell you the truth this bringing Sheffield to the Mets is a no loose proposition.

They would have to pay him just $400K as he will be drawing $14 mil from the Tigers, it adds a sorely needed right hand bat to the lineup and he knows this is the last round-up, fuck up here and you’re done and it rids the Mets of Marlon Anderson.

The only real drawback that I can see is in the field where the 40 year old Sheffield is a liability, but he has to know he would come here not as an everyday player but a platoon/righty bat off the bench guy.

The guy who is impacted by this move is Ryan Church as he would platoon with Sheff in RF. No way Daniel Murphy suffers here  as he is now” Plays Daily Danny” so as far as Church’s feelings a concerned, suck it up son this is the big leagues.

So if Omar wants to bring Sheffield in and work a platoon in RF I vote Yea.

It’s amazing how clear things are after a head banging session.
