NY Mets Could Contend in 2013 But They Won’t

We are somewhat back to normal, whatever normal is. Roof is back on and today my ceiling should be finished and tomorrow I have someone coming in to steam clean and deodorize my carpet and couches just in time for the next storm tomorrow afternoon/night.

I’m starting to catch up on some of the Mets news of the last week or so and I see a lot of good opportunity for the Mets to add some players that bring a of of what’s missing on this team, unfortunately these moves will take money something the Mets don’t have a lot of and that’s a damn shame because I think with a couple of key signings the Mets would morph into the SF Giants East.

I’ve said from the end of the season that the organization has an acceptance of failure as we’ve seen through the second halves of the last four seasons. This happens when you have a lack of battle tested players who know what it takes to win. From looking over the free agent list, there are players available who fit that bill such as:

A.J. Pierzynski would be #1 on my wish list. I’ve been a fan of Pierzynski’s for a long time and have hoped the Mets would have traded for him as well, now here he is sitting right there on the free agent front ready to picked by the Mets who are the neediest of teams when it comes to catching. You not only fill your huge need for a front line catcher but you add a guy with a World Series ring and a lot of snark and the Mets are sorely in need of snark.  How would a catching combo of Pierzynski and David Ross look in blue and orange?  Yes I know I’m asking too much.

I know we all hate Shane Victorino but if he were in a Mets uni that would all change for me. Please don’t give me he was Phuck Phace as a reason for the Mets not to sign him, again he has a World Series ring and is an annoying little prick and that’s what the Mets need both a winner and annoying pricks. I’d take a shot at using him as the everyday center fielder even though he’s not the center fielder he used to be, he’d still be a major upgrade over Andres Torres and don’t think if he became a Met he wouldn’t  ramp it up when the Mets take on the Phuck Phaces.

Cody Ross, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Cody Ross. Word out of Boston is Ross is looking for 3yrs/$25 mil a bit steep but then again it’s an negotiation and one the Mets should get involved in. Ross again comes with a winning pedigree and an edge which I know I’m sounding like a broken record, the Mets sorely need. An outfield of Bay/Duda in LF, Victorino in CF and Ross in RF with Ike, Murph, Tejeda, Wright and Pierzynski added to the starting rotation and a couple of relievers added in make the Mets a true contender in NL. Sadly the odds of these moves happening as nil

WE INTERUPT YOUR WINTER OF DISCONTENT WITH SOME GOOD NY METS NEWS

Blue sky, sunshine

What a day to take a walk in the park

Ice Cream, daydream

Till the sky becomes a blanket of stars

What is this? Positive Mets stories? And from all places the New York Post?  Hey what the hell it’s Valentine’s Day right? A good day to tone down the Mets snark right?

Johan Santana is down in St. Lonesome and is determined to become a contributor to the team this coming season. Santana has not thrown off a mound yet, he may do that by the end of the week, but yesterday he was stretching out his arm by having a long toss catch with Terry Collins. According to Santana, he’s done with rehab and is now working on building arm strength and working on his mechanics and getting his delivery back to where it once was.

What makes me optimistic that Santana can come back is his intelligence on the mound, he may never get the velocity back but he’s clever enough and schooled enough in the art of pitching to make the adjustments needed to become a solid starting pitcher once again.

Ike is alright, or so he says. Ike Davis is in camp early as is Daniel Murphy as both had bad season ending injuries and both are trying to come back and build on what looked to be solid offensive seasons in 2011. Murphy has the added burden of working on his defense, and as we know Murph never shies away from working hard, oh yeah #ImWith28.

Terry Collins is a pragmatist; he sees the landscape of the NL East and knows that his team will have to play flawless baseball to keep up in this division. He also realizes that there is a lot peripheral bullshit surrounding this team and it’s his job to keep it on the periphery and focus on making the right pitch and the right time, get the big hit with men on base, and playing solid fundamental baseball. It’s a tough agenda but with a season of managing this team under his belt, Collins should be up for the task

BE CAREFUL METS HATERS, YOUR SNARK MAY COME BACK TO BITE YOU

Ok, Ok, I get it the Mets are broke and the Skill Sets are in denial as their empire is crumbling all around them, so can all the copycat writers stop with the regurgitation of the Skill Sets financial quagmire please. How the hell can anyone write about the rise and fall of Freddy and Saul after Howard Megdal ,  who has written extensively on this subject, put all the pieces together in his book Wilpon’s Folly. Everything that has been dished out by other writers is just a total rip off of Howard’s hard work. There is without a doubt more honor amongst bloggers than there is among the main stream media.

Let’s set another record straight as well as we get closer to reporting date of spring training. The club that will report to St. Lonesome in a week is not the re-incarnation of the 1962 Mets. They are not the 1986 Mets either.  This is not the worst team in baseball either; right now the Mets are a middle of the pack team. Sure the Mets will be a disadvantage playing in the stacked NL East but after what we’ve seen of this club last year do you really think they are going to lay down or go through the motions? Do you think Terry Collins or Sandy Alderson will tolerate that? While on the subject of Sandy Alderson, Twitter is all a twitter over the GM tweeting some self-depreciating humor about the club; some folks are outraged over the snarky tweets that Alderson has tweeted. I guess those folks just don’t get it, Alderson possess an outstanding dry sense of humor and is using social media as a platform as satire on all the comments about the teams money situation. Got get with the program folks this is the thinking fans GM.

Look, I’d be as happy as any Mets fan is the Skill Sets sold the club and moved on, never to be heard from again but I’ve been rooting for this team for too long and my love of baseball too deep to let their difficulties spoil my summer. As I said in an earlier post I’m rooting for Daniel Murphy and R.A Dickey and after reading the piece in the NY Daily News on Jason Bay, I’ll root hard for him as well. Sure this team pisses me off a lot, I’m mad as hell that the team doesn’t have money for starting pitching depth or a decent left handed bat for the bench but as angry as I am, I can’t wait for the first spring game out of St. Lonesome on SNY.

I have no right to tell people how to spend their money and no one has the right to do that to me, if you feel not going to Citi Field or watching the team on SNY or buying Mets merchandise will drive the Skill Sets out of power, that’s your right but for me not going to Citi Field or watching SNY or listening to games on WFAN or buying a Mets 50th Anniversary jersey  would just make me fucking miserable (or more fucking miserable than a normal day)it’s what I love to do.

If you want to root against the Skill Sets that’s fine but to root against the Mets and by the Mets I mean the players, coaches and manager, that’s just plain stupid.

Remember all your favorite MSM columnists in this town were ready to burry Tom Coughlin, Jerry Reece and the coaching staff of the NY Football Giants  in December, today they have Coughlin in the Hall of Fame, Reece is a genius and the coaching staff was right to stay the course. Two weeks ago, the media was running Mike D’Antoni out of town on a rail, Melo was out with injury and Amare had a family tragedy to deal with so the Knicks were finished, But, out of nowhere came Jeremy Lin and now the media is ready to kill Melo and Amare if they don’t come back and mesh with the rest of their teammates as Jeremy Lin has brought his Harvard Chemistry Set to turn the 2012 Knicks into 1969 Knicks.  So take note of all the MSM folks who are predicting that the Mets will suck this coming season and when they become the surprise team in MLB, remember who called bullshit first when the fish wraps start comparing Terry Collins to Billy Martin as his “gritty, gutsy”  Mets win more games than they lose.
