I AM NOT OF SOUND MIND OR BODY

I was all set to read a bunch of Mets stuff today and write a nice post on what I missed since I was gone for the week but to tell you the truth I’m exhausted.

We boarded our flight from Orlando at 7PM last night figuring we’d get into Newark by 9:30 or so and get home by 10:30-11:00, no bad at all. Well, that didn’t go as planned. We sat on the runway of Orlando Int’l Airport for an hour and fifteen minutes with screaming babies and the nastiest flight crew that JetBlue could find (gee, I’m sorry I asked for another bottle of water, but I’ve been sitting here for over hour, you Grand Pa Munster lookalike old fucking hag, so make it fucking tolerable will ya?) so by the time we landed in Newark and headed to the long term parking lot which I believe is right outside Atlantic City, it was about a quarter to one when we stepped into the house. By the time we get all situated and browsed a week’s worth mail and then caught up on some baseball highlights, it was 3AM when I collapsed in bed.

I did wake up in time to see ManU storm back from a 2 nil deficit to take the FA Community Shield (a kind of Mayor’s Trophy Game) from Manchester City , 3-2. The EPL gets under way next weekend as does NFL pre-season (this looks like a very long season for us fans of the New York Football Giants, the over/under on Bill Cowher to the Giants in 2012 stories is at  1,237 ) and baseball is headed toward the dog days of August, only to emerge into the September Pennant races and post season. It’s a great time to be a sports fan.

So now I need to shower and get dressed and head down to St. George to watch the Cyclones-Highlanders game which is a part of my Father’s Day gift (all games between the Cyclones and Highlanders) thankfully it’s a 4PM game so I can come home and get my mind ready to go back to work tomorrow. There is nothing worse than the first day of work after a vacation

WAITING ON IKE’S MRI…..AND WAITING….AND WAITING…AND…

I got so busy yesterday that I wasn’t able to put up a post and I so wanted to mention the passing of NY Daily News sports cartoonist, Bill Gallo. Everyone who grew up a sports fan in NYC knows of Gallo’s work as a cartoonist and as a boxing writer at the News. Gallo was also a WWII vet and is one more loss of that Greatest Generation. Hopefully the News will run some of his classic cartoons with characters like Yuchie and Gloomy Gus and of course the iconic, Basement Bertha.

I know NYC has the best restaurants, museums, and entertainment and of course there are some of the best medical facilities in the world here, but I have to think that the city of Denver has competent doctors and medical technicians who are proficient in administrating and MRI, so why would the Mets fly Ike Davis back to NYC to have an MRI of his leg? Add in the inclement weather in Denver and that adds to the mystery. By the way, where do the Rockies send their players when they need medical procedure? I doubt it’s to NYC.

So as we await the results of Ike’s MRI, F-Mart is on standby in Denver in case Ike goes to the DL .

Yesterday was not a good day for the Skill Sets, first they learned that Steve Cohen, the man they picked t join them as a part owner, decided he didn’t want in. Could be he didn’t to answer questions by the Commissioner about his being looked at by the SEC for insider trading (an allegation he strongly denies) or Cohen wants full ownership or the right to buy a majority share of the club if or when the Skill Sets have to sell off the club and its assets.

To get great insight on the ownership problems of the Skill Sets and more evidence that there is no other solution for them but to sell the team, SNY, and ballpark, I urge you to listen to my conversation with Howard Megdal of the LoHud Mets Blog and author of a great new book “Taking The Field, A Fans Quest To Run The Team He Loves “(published by Bloomsbury) on THIS CALL TO THE BULLPEN Podcast from yesterday. Also when you check out LoHud Mets blog be sure to click on the Facebook “Like” button for a chance to win a copy of Howard’s book, which details his candidacy for Mets GM. The book details Howard’s ideas for running the Mets on the platform of Logic, Transparency and Logic  as well as intertwining  some great Mets history.

Second piece of bad news for the Skill Sets was the indictment of former clubhouse man Charlie Samuels on charges of thief of equipment and jerseys that he sold for profit.  Seems Samuels was padding bills to the club and skimming the excess off right into his pockets. The trial should be a doozy as I’m sure Mets players will be called to testify. I hope Jeff Francouer gets a subpoena because I’d sure like to hear about the $50,000 check he had Samuels cash for him to buy his parents a car in cash.

TODAY IS NOT ABOUT THE M-E-T-S, IT’S ABOUT THE J-E-T-S

As a NY Football Giants fan, my main enjoyment this past weekend should be that the Dallas Cowgirls choked again in the NFL post season (how about a great big Kranepool Society  FUCK YOU to Jerry  Jones the owner of the Cowgirls and how about that fat fuck Flozell Adams, left a playoff game with a boo-boo on his calf, fucking coward!) but in fact I am actually happy with the Jets winning yesterday in San Diego.

The Giants fans-Jets fan relationship is strange by New York sports fan standards. As a NY Ranger fan, I hate the Icelanders immensely (da-da-da-dada da-da-da-dada da-da-da-dada da-da-da POTVIN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!)  and as most local hockey fans, I’m blasé about the K.C. Scouts/Colorado Rockies/NJ Devils. They only player well known in Newark is their over weight and overrated goaltender. As a Boston Cletics fan the good thing about having the Knicks and Nets around is I get to see the C’s in person four times a year. As for the Bronx Bastards, the hatred between us and them is well documented. But as far as Giants-Jets fans go, we just go about our business come football season.

I got wrapped up the Jets game yesterday because the style of football they play is the antithesis of what the NFL is all about these days and a style I love. It’s all about spread offenses and quarterbacks throwing 35 times a game Wildcat formation (which is a basic Pop Warner offense) and high flying wide outs and games in domes under controlled climates but then here come the Jets with a page out of” simple still works” playbook. Pound the ball on offense, control the clock, have your QB mange the game and not have to make a big play, then on defense attack the line of scrimmage like a jail break and make the QB as uncomfortable in the pocket as you can, hit the wide outs hard early to get them out of their rhythm  . Add in a few turnovers and you have a wining formula.

During the season Jets coach Rex Ryan annoyed me with his big mouth and bluster. The reason being I was so used to the Same Old Jets who are great in April on Draft Day and then again in August in games that don’t count in the standings but then come the regular season, well Same Old Jets. But Ryan has taken that Same Old Jets stigma and turned it into a positive, a rallying cry. Last night on the SNY Jets Post Game show the played a clip of Ryan and his team in their jubilant locker room. Ryan gathered his team around him and said something that has converted me to be a Rex Ryan fan:

“ok fella’s listen up, great game today, great effort and you should be proud of everything you’ve accomplished so far. But tomorrow the headline in the papers will be THREE FIRST PLACE TEAM ADVANCE……..AND THE FUCKIN’ JETS”

With that his players roared in delight. This is Rex Ryan’ team  and the story of the Jets season so far is an unbelievable one and as crazy as this sounds from a Giants fan, I hope they win the Fuckin’ Super Bowl.
