THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO FREDDY SKILL SETS

Seems I have two allies in the Skill Sets Stay Home camp in Bob Klapish and Harvey Aarton. After that stellar performance by Jeffy Skill Sets yesterday, Freddy Skill Sets will address the media this morning at St. Lonesome.

Freddy will say that he was duped by Madoff and he is hurt by the betrayal and he never saw it coming and he will not sell the team and the team will be in the Skill Set family for generations (just like this blog, I want my grandchildren and great grandchildren to carry on my tradition of poor taste and over use of profanity) and this will not affect the team and by the way, did I tell you we have one of the highest payrolls in baseball? In other words there will be nothing of substance said at the sunrise sermon. Even more reason for Freddy and Jeffy to keep their ass’ home.

Ed Marcus/Rusty Jr comes out with a stunner at #20 in top 50 Mets of all time countdown.

With all my ranting on the Skill Sets setting up their circus tent in St Lonesome, I forgot to comment on the return of Izzy. Izzy flashed some talent when he was a Mets as part of the Generation K trio of Bill Pulsipher, Paul Wilson and Izzy but he was really immature. Now at 38 years old and success as a closer and a rebuilt Tommy John-ed elbow, who knows, maybe he finds what he left in St. Louis. Year after TJ surgery/past success/works  cheap this is the new undervalued commodity in this  Sandy Alderson Production.

By the way, Izzy was given #45. OUCH!!! Sorry Johnny.

METS PITCHING STAFF, ADD 2 SUBTRACT 1

The Mets announced this evening that they have signed LHP Chris Capuano and RHP Taylor Buchholz to 1 year contracts, and to make room on the 40 man roster they have released P Ryota Igarashi.

Cutting Igarashi is a surprised but adding Capuano and Buchholz, who both battle arm problems (Capuano is a two-time Tommy John surgery patient)  both fall under the low risk/high reward mantle.

Capuano will most likely compete for the 4/5 spot in the rotation. If (and it’s a big if) Capuano is of sound shoulder and body, he could be this years version of R.A. Dickey. Capuano did show some increase in velocity last season when he joined the Brewers after rehab assignment but he is not a power pitcher. His best pitch is his change and he incorporates a cutter as well.  When he’s on his game, Capuano will induce more ground balls than fly balls.

Buchholz is also a Tommy John-er with his surgery coming in 2009. Buchholz is a fly ball pitcher which fits very nicely in Citi Field.

So with the new year under way two low cost gambles by Sandy Alderson have arrived. I like the Capuano signing alot. Of course everything with Cap hinges on his arm being sound and if it is ,this move could pay off handsomely for Alderson. As for Buchholz, I’ll wait and see .

SICK AS A DOG, WHAT’S YOUR STORY?

…..cause you really ain’t that young………..

I have a nasty chest cold today and feel like shit so I’m hoping the Mets keep their trade hand pat as I’d hate for them to pull off a blockbuster today like getting Albert Puljos and Adam Wainright for Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez and Tony Bernazard’s wife beater, as my energy level as now at dragging ass.

One announcement before I mainline Vick’s Vapor Rub, the Mets signed Japanese RHP and Tommy John surgery survivor Ryota Igarashi. Igarashi, 30 will be given the set up tole to Frankie Rodz to lose this spring as he possesses a 90+ FB and a killer spilt/sinker (or so they say)

Igarashi will also represent the Mets at the Nathans’ Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island on July 4th.

I really need to lay down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROLL METS ROLL

Thank you to everyone who commented and emailed me with suggestions to help me with my pitching staff. I am happy to report that we won our first game of the season 10-0 (now 1-3 on the year) with only three walks against us in the game. Rick Peterson would be proud of all of you.

Speaking of The Jacket, he will play himself in the movie version of “Moneyball” with Brad Pitt playing Billy Bean.  Art Howe will also be in the film playing the cadaver they extract  the ligaments from for Tommy John surgery.

The Mets are rolling through NOCAL yesterday 9-6 win. Another strong start I felt, by Johan Santana who had one bad inning (the 6th) in the 7 innings he pitched as he had an incredible 79/22 K/B spilt plus he got the win to go to 5-2.

The pitching and hitting is as good for the Mets as any in baseball right now but the fielding needs to tighten up a bit especially with Wright and Castillo. Yes I’m never happy I have to find something to bitch about with this team.

With Carlos Delgado on the DL (what a shock!) the Mets have to make decision on what to do with first base. I don’t see how Jeremy Reed is an option over Daniel Murphy if they want to go a righty/lefty platoon. In fact it looks like the increased playing time for Reed is more of a showcase as why would you need both Reed and Angel Pagan on this roster that now is top heavy with outfielders? Pagan can do as much if not more than Reed both with the bat and in the field plus the added bonus of being a switch hitter. Maybe  a deal with the Orioles for Aubry Huff that would have the Mets send Reed and Eddie Kunz to Baltimore could snare Huff? By the way can we let Murphy play tonight at first base? It’s been four games since his last start. FREE DANIEL MURPHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A reminder, I will be a guest tonight on The Seven Train To Shea Radio Program tonight at 7PM EDST.

A QUICK HIT BEFORE I GO FOR A QUIK HIT

Busy day as I drafted my 13 year old Babe Ruth team this morning and I’m very happy that I got to pick my top three prospects and now I’m dealing with a nasty head cold that’s sucking the energy out me. I was going to stay away from the computer but after a looking at few stories a few items caught my eye:

John Maine had a very shaky first inning but then settled in to pitch three very strong ones (0 BB 5K) and it looks like it’s not a matter of Bobby Parnell making th team as a reliever but he figures to a major player in the back end of the pen so says Warlord Jerry

Jeopardy Contestant “I’ll take FREE FALL for 100 Alex”

Alex Trebeck: “The Stock Market, Republican Party, Team USA

Jeopardy Contestant: “What is American institutions that are not worth shit

Trebeck: “Correct”

I’ve got to do a little homework on RHP Fernando Nieve who was picked up by the Mets off waivers from the Astros. I know he was signed by the “Stros at 16 and is now 26 and is a year removed from Tommy John surgery. No risk- high reward pick up by the Mets at best he comes up mid season to bolster the pen worst case he’s filler for the Buffalo pen

I’m done. Time for a hit of Sudefed

TEAM REDEMPTION: THE METS 6X5 2/3 RELAY TEAM

I guess we better get used to this. It looks like it will take a minimum of three pitchers with a max of six pitchers a game for the Mets to grab the NL East Flag as the Magic Number stands today at Sweet 16.

Again last night a game that looked like it was going to be a 12-10 or 14-12 loss due to an ineffective Ollie P but the day was saved by the relay team of Figgy, Knight, Smith, Mush-Stache (he looks like he’s auditioning for a role in Boogie Nights II, Show or changing his name to Chest Rockwell) and of course the 1-2 punch of Stokes/Ayala. Absent is the name Heilman from this list that because he’s on the bus you know with the ladies.

The Carlos Del-GOD-o saga just get better and better every game. It’s one of the great sports stories in ages. Here is a player who was close to being bought out of his contract to now becoming the leader in the NL MVP race. It’s not just the fact he is driving in runs and hitting home runs but his hommers are Ruthian and they come in clutch situations as do his RBI (I love how Mex calls them “Rib-Eye Steaks“) THEN add in his Wes Parker like glove work at first base and as hard as this is to believe, Del-GOD-o could be on his way to be the first Mets player to win an MVP. I need to sit down.

It was very tough to watch the Billy Wags presser yesterday as he talked about dealing with his up coming Tommy John surgery and having to tell his son that he won’t be pitching next year and the awful realization that he may never wear a Mets uni again. The best he can hope for is he gets the surgery now and rehabs all spring and summer and pitches for the Mets next September. I’ll be lighting a candle for Billy on Sunday.

I think it’s a pipedream that John Maine pitches again for the Mets this season. This theory that he can pitch out of the bullpen in the playoffs is nuts. If he needs surgery then let him go for it already and get well for spring. Just look at the Wagner situation that went from a cramp in his forearm, to elbow discomfort to surgery. The Mets look to be taking a page out of the Bill Belichick book of dealing with injury info.

Curt Schilling has another “LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME” moment that he is famous for. What an A-1 Dickhead.

NOT A GOOD DAY IN THE LAND OF THE SKILL SETS

I’ve been out of my office all day as I had to go for a training class so when I get back I’m all set to write up a post on how I’m not worried about Billy Wags, done for the season and career as a Met due to Tommy John surgery. I was all set to say how I feel bad for Wags that he has to go under the knife and endure all the rehab that follows but I felt that with the way J-Man has mixed and matched his relievers and how guys like Brian Stokes and Luis Ayala have stepped up that maybe now that it’s a done deal that Wags is gone that the Mets will use this as “no respect” card to rally around.

Even if Wags is done for the year as much as I don’t even want to contemplate the 2009 season as we are up to our eyeballs in a fight for the division with the Phillies, I thought well there is Ayala, Stokes, Eddie Kunz  and maybe even a kid like Steven Clyene  who be as effective as a closer then I read Tom Verducci’ story on where have all the two inning closers gone and why hasn’t an organization stepped up and gone back to the Rolllie Fingers, Goose Goosage Bruce Sutter model of reliever. Then it dawned on me “Hey what about Ambriorix Burgos? Burgos is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and has been pitching in some minor league games and should be ready to go to winter league so throw Burgos in the mix with the other guys I mentioned and you know what? We are not in as bad shape as I thought. Then I see this in my Google Reader:

Mets Pitcher Burgos Arrested For Assaulting Girlfriend

We don’t know the whole story so I won’t jump to conclusion but if all this proves true then Burgos has got to be released. As this behavior can not be tolerated but I am willing to hear his account but I don’t know what he can say to justify his action. Right now Burgos is just a big fucking coward as far as I’m concerned.
