“GM’S MEET, SANDY’S LISTENIN’, A BEAUTIFUL SITE, MAKE A TRADE EVERY NIGHT, WALKIN’ IN A WINTER MEETINGS WONDERLAND”

From the looks of things, Sandy Alderson and his staff seem anxious to get to Orlando and baseball’s Winter Meetings but  he won’t be bringing home any high end gifts to Mets fans. There will be no diamond studded Mickey Mouse watches coming our way, maybe a sweatshirt or t-shirt or two, nothing extravagant but more sensible.

No doubt the Mets will float the names Beltran, Reyes and Rodriquez during the cocktail parties and lobby loitering they will be doing so who knows, maybe the foundation for a blockbuster will be laid down but it seems like the Mets will wait until all the big pieces land before looking at the C and D list of free agents.

I like the honesty of Sandy Alderson when he states the fact that this team as is will be “competitive” and refrains from blowing smoke up the fan base’ ass that this team is a pennant contender. If that bothers you then you as a Mets fan need to grow up and realize the days of hearing fairy tales from the GM’s office are over.  I like the fact that this front office doesn’t listen to the fan base when it comes to personnel decisions. That was the big failure of the last regime, they tried too hard to keeps us happy, well fuck our happiness, just give me competence and a couple of nice t-shirts.

Alderson will meet with Omar Minaya to see where his standing is in the organization. I’ve almost forgotten that Minaya was not fired but re-assigned in his job duties but it he has options and quite frankly I think this sit down is more of how to pay Omar a buyout than a job offer.

Unless some GM loses his mind or gets a serious load on and makes an offer to Alderson for Ollie Perez, it looks as though OP will make it to St. Lonesome so the GM can observe him in order to make a decision to keep him or dump him. I guess Alderson’ thinks is I’m going to have to pay this scrub anyway  might as well see if he has any redeeming features  before  I decide his fate.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz WHAT? NO, NO METS NEWS TODAY, ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

Motivation to blog about the Mets is a real challenge today. Everyday at the Winter Meetings is Groundhog Day. But I guess there are a few moves that need to be addressed so here we go:

Scott Boras has entered the building and I agree with Mike Silva, Boras needs the Mets to get in the mix for Matt Holiday just to drive the price up. The Mets, Cardinals, Red Sox and maybe the Angels are Holiday’s best bets and with Boras blowing smoke up Mets managements ass about having the wherewith all to sign Holiday it’s quite clear that playing for a winning team is not paramount to Holiday signing a contract.

“The Mets have a network and they have an infrastructure there that is, I mean, it’s a juggernaut economically,” Boras said at the winter meetings Wednesday afternoon. “We’ve seen what NESN has done and they’ve become if not a multi-billion, over a billion-dollar franchise. The YES Network is a multi-billion dollar network and franchise. The infrastructure that they’ve built with the SNY network follows. They’ve got a brand new ballpark. They’re in New York City. Their revenues are in the top three or four in baseball. I mean, the New York Mets have a lot of choices. And the Wilpon family is very successful. Sure, the Mets can sign any player they want to if they so choose to.”

There is nothing in that statement that you can argue with. If you are a Mets fan, Scott Boras just did you the biggest favor of the off season by calling bullshit on the Mets inactivity. Of course he doesn’t give a shit about you or me or any Mets fan but by calling out the ownership to get in the game, we owe him some gratitude.

The piece of baseball news I’ve heard so far these winter meetings was that Peter Gammons has left the WWL and will join MLB.com and the MLB Network. I have had the pleasure of watching the Cape Cod League All Star game with Gammons a few years ago in Orleans and he was a real gentleman. We not just talked baseball but he is a real encyclopedia of Rock and Roll history as well. Congratulations Pete!

METS FRONT OFFICE ARRIVES IN INDY

Good to see the Mets have Gil Meche on their radar, as the stories are flying fast and furious tha the Mets and Royals are looking to become trade partners at the winter Meetings.

I like Meche as a pitcher to fill the 3 or 4 spot in the rotation. He throws a heavy fastball and a nice curve that induces a lot of ground ball outs. His biggest draw back is his walk rate. His BB/9 rate last year was 4.5 with a career mark of 3.65, which if he stays at is tolerable. Meche also had some health issues with his back and shoulder fatigue.

The Royals are looking to dump Jose Guillen and his $12 mil salary. The interesting thing with Guillen is how does it affect Fernando Martinez ? F-Mart is again sitting out time from his Winter League team, due to blisters on his hands. His manager is no other than Moises Alou who of course advocates giving your hands a golden shower to toughen them up. I bet Tiger Woods has hands like tree bark, who knew Eldrick Woods was such a freak? But, I digess….

What does Mets management think of F-Mart? Do they still hold him in high esteem as a top prospect and the LF of the future or do they look at them as a talent that will never reach full potential? If he still in the Mets plans as a big leaguer the could go with Guillen and allow F-Mart to finally show he can play a full baseball season without getting hurt where he loses large chuck of playing time. With the names we’ve been hearing, Guillen and Pat Burrell it looks as if the Mets are still looking at F-Mart as the long term LF option. If it comes down to either Guillen or Burrell I’d rather keep Angel Pagan.

Of course it all goes out the window if Matt Holiday becomes signable but I doubt that will happen.

MY PEACEFUL EASY FEELING RUINED

I spent the morning at the Staten Island Ice Pavilion watching my daughter ice skate. I was really enjoying myself  watching her glide along the ice and my XL Dunkin Donuts coffee and drifting off into thoughts of what will happen next week at the Winter Meetings especially since I will be joining Joe McDonald starting Monday night at 9PM EST on Pro Baseball Central with live reports from Las Vegas. I’m trying to tell myself that Francisco Rodriguez is the missing piece to the pen. But then I contradict myself with thoughts of Kerry Wood closing and then passing the torch to Eddie Kunz, Bobby Parnell or Bradley Holt. I drift off in the thought of Omar Minaya pulling a deal that no one saw coming like this nutty one I read this morning. I even day dreamed of D-Wright working out with a mind set of leading his team to the post season and an MVP award. It felt sooooo good to think good baseball thoughts that I could see and feel myself in my Mr. Met t-shirt, shorts and flip flops on a beautiful 80 degree Saturday waiting on line at the Shake Shack stand at $iti Field Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh But of course someone has to drop a turd in my punch bowl.

As soon as I heard “Well we’ll sign C.C  then Burnett and Texiera and that will put us back where we belong” Ughhhhhhhhhhh Highlander fans. Can’t a man enjoy a Saturday morning without these blow hards? Then blow hards buddy Nit Wit chimes in “Yeah and wit Joba and Wang we’s will have da best rotation in baseball because we is da Yankees ya know” and they both laugh like retards. Now I try to ignore them and just chill with my java but of course they can’t leave well enough alone. “We ain’t like dem looosers da Mets” says Blow Hard to which Nit Wit replies “Uhhhhhhhh Da Mets suck”

Now my morning is ruined. I’m ready to get my daughter to go find their daughters and do a Tonya Harding on their ass but then I decide to do my own dirty work. I pull my Mets cap a little more down in the front and turn to them and say “If I were you guys I’d worry more about the Red Sox and Rays than the Mets, since you can’t beat either of them” They see the Mets cap and reply to me how the Mets choked and how they are losers and yada, yada yada. I answer them the best way I could. I told these jokers that at least Mets fan realize their team’s flaws and are intelligent enough to look over the possibilities available to them to fix their problems and go back and forth with each other unlike Highlander fans who just say “buy whoever is out there”

Both dopes knew nothing about the teams farm system other then they both thought Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy should be traded and that Joba will win the Cy Young. After I heard that I was thankful my daughters lesson was over and we could leave and I did with a good feeling knowing that it’s good to be a Mets fan.

CAREFULL I’M PACKIN’

Monday mornings after a long weekend are a bitch but it could be worse, I mean I could have shot myself in the leg with an unlicensed hand gun or I could have shown up to work and have my boss tell me go home until maybe Department of Buildings or Department of Transportation take my sorry ass in but no my fella’s welcomed me back with open arms, well as open as they can be when they are clutching ham and egg sandwiches. Anywhoo on to the news of day:

I wonder if the Mets are hoping that Oliver Perez turns down arbitration and would be happier with the draft picks than with OP. With all the non activity that has brought the Hot Stove to a crawl as I stated on Saturday I can not figure out Omar Minaya’s game plan at all. But this much I am sure of the natives in the Blue and Orange village are growing very restless and want to see some kind of move being made.

Toby Hyde on his Mets Minor League Blog posts about Nick Evans missing in action in the winter leagues. Hyde speculates that Evans who has been ineffective with the bat has been sent home. That’s not a good sign.

I find it very interesting that this morning at work we received our yearly e mail on how city workers are not to take tips or gratuities from the public and if you do we risk losing our jobs. Same thing with giving gifts to subordinates and bosses that is a no-no as well. But jacking up baseball executives for free use of a luxury suite with free grub and booze is fine for those employed at City Hall. As I always say never trust a guy in a shirt and tie.

From NY Baseball Digest by way of Baseball Prospectus it looks like Manny Ramirez could be on Omar Minaya’ mind come the Winter Meetings next week in Las Vegas. With over 4million fans packing the late Shea Stadium last year, there own state run television network and a brand new pleasure palace that has all it suites filled with New York City’ finest stuffed shirts the last thing me or any other Mets fan wants to hear from the Omar and the Skill Sets is cost cutting. My patience which is in short supply to begin with is getting depleted every day .

On this date in the year 2000, Turk Wendell signed a three year deal with the Mets for $9,999,999.99 to go along with his #99 on his jersey.

Nice little feature on Jon Matlack in yesterday’s Daily News. I wish it went a bit further as it would have been interesting to read Matlack’s recollection of the 1973 Ya Gotta Believe regular and his  post season performence especially the World Series where Matlack  lost game 1, then came back to win game 4 but lasted just 2 2/3 innings in game 7 .
